A Fast Food Chain You Never Thought Would Give Away Free Coffee After Pret AXES’ ‘Generous’ Reward Program
A fast food chain you never thought would be offering free coffee after Pret A Manger scrapped its rewards program, leaving customers furious.
The £30 monthly subscription and savings with Club Pret equates to five drinks a day for just £1.
From September, the cost of the programme will be reduced to £10 a month, which would equate to around 33p a day.
But now you have to pay half the price of your favorite drink.
If you buy a hot drink at £3 each, you’ll pay £1.50, plus 33p membership, so £1.75 for a coffee.
If you ordered four more on the same day, it would cost you an extra £6, making a total of £7.75 for five drinks in one day.
To cushion the blow, Pret has slashed the price of its no-frills filter coffee to 99p, down from £1.80.
But the decision to scrap the “generous” scheme has left customers furious, with some calling it a “huge mistake” and vowing to find another high street alternative.
Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, one wrote: “In light of the changes recently announced today to Pret A Manger’s barista-prepared drink subscription and perks, I guess it’s time to give Leon’s Roast Rewards a try.”
You can sign up to Leon’s Roast Rewards channel for £25 a month and, as with Pret’s original offer, get five barista-prepared drinks a day.
That works out to around 83p a day for five drinks – certainly not a bad deal if you’re buying even one coffee a day.
According to the off subscription conditions, you can only buy one drink per hour.
So you can’t get a free drink for you and a friend at the same time.
As part of this program, you also get 20% off breakfast and the daily menu.
There are Leon branches all over the country, you can find the one closest to you using the Find Leon tool on the website.
Do other coffee chains have loyalty programs?
Starbucks
You can get a free membership to Starbucks, which is a no-brainer if you regularly drink there.
Customers get three stars for every £1 partially spent, and then a free drink when they get 150 stars. That’s a spend of around £50.
For a small latte at £2.95, that means you buy 17 small lattes to get one free.
Taking inspiration from airline loyalty programs, Starbucks offers a “gold tier.”
You will achieve this once you have collected 450 stars, after spending £84.
It allows you to enjoy perks like free extra shots, dairy-free milks and whipped cream.
A drink is also offered on the house for your birthday.
How it works:
- £1 spent = three stars (includes part-spent £), 150 stars = free drink
- Cost of small latte: £2.95
- Number of drinks to consume to reach the goal: 17
- Cost of a ‘free’ coffee: £50.15
- Reusable Cup Bonus: 25p off
Club Pret changes will cost coffee lovers dearly
Sun Savers editor Lana Clements gives her verdict on the changes to the Club Pret program.
The Club Pret subscription and savings program has been extremely popular with coffee lovers.
If you like to treat yourself to a hot or iced beverage every day, the savings are well worth it.
The price of £30 a month may seem quite steep, but that equates to five drinks a day for just £1.
The cost of the scheme has now been reduced to £10 a month, or around 33p a day. But you will now have to pay half the price of your favourite drink.
If you buy a medium white coffee for £3, you’ll pay £1.50, plus the 33p membership fee, making it £1.75 for one coffee. If you order four more on the same day, it’ll cost you an extra £6, making a total of £7.75 for five drinks in one day.
To cushion the blow, Pret has slashed the price of its no-frills filter coffee to 99p, down from £1.80.
But those who like a drink with extras might find that other coffee chains are now offering better deals. For example, you can sign up to Leon’s Roast Rewards for £25 a month and get five barista-prepared drinks a day. That works out at around 83p a day for five drinks. Not bad, not bad at all.
Black coffee
Each drink earns you a reward stamp in your Caffe Nero app, which is also free.
You get an extra one if you bring your own mug.
Every nine stamps represents a free drink.
So, grab your reusable cup and get a free latte, cappuccino, flat white or any other caffeine of your choice after paying just four and a half.
With a small latte costing £3.50, this one is free after spending £31.50.
Opt for a reusable cup and you’ll save half your money, at just £15.75.
How it works:
- Buy one drink = get one stamp, get nine stamps = get one free drink
- Cost of small latte: £3.50
- Number of drinks to consume to reach the goal: Nine
- Cost of a ‘free’ coffee: £31.50
- Reusable Cup Bonus: Yes, an extra stamp
Side
Costa also offers a free loyalty program, but also changed the terms last August
Customers now have to buy two extra coffees to get one free at Costa, meaning you’ll get a free gift after buying ten, instead of eight.
As with Nero, you get an extra stamp for a reusable cup.
The stamps can be collected at any of the chain’s 2,800 cafes, as well as around 12,000 machines at gas stations and convenience stores.
How it works:
- Buy one drink = one grain, 10 grains = free drink
- Cost of small latte: £3.50
- Number of drinks to consume to reach the goal: ten
- Cost of a ‘free’ coffee: £35
- Reusable Cup Bonus: Yes, an extra bean
