African cuisine on the menu at Alex View Nono’s Kitchen
Alex View Nono’s Kitchen, the brainchild of local food enthusiast Sarah “Nono” Modiba, has opened its doors in Alexandra, promising a delicious range of dishes and a vibrant community atmosphere.
Modiba said her journey to entrepreneurship began in 2008 when she moved to Limpopo and became a mother in 2009, where her life took a turn and she had to find ways for herself and her baby to survive.

“I moved to have my first born and life hasn’t been easy for me.
“I then spotted a business opportunity at CN Mahlangu FET College where I sold spaghetti and minced meat to students. Demand was high and I received requests from the SRC to organize their conferences.
Modiba continued to explore new opportunities as her business grew, eventually returning to Gauteng in 2011. She worked with her father in his automotive engineering business and eventually registered a business with her sister Maryjane, focused on catering for government and the private sector.
“In February 2024, I rented a small shop selling pap and meaty bones, minced kota, steak and pap, cow heels, mogodu and shawarma. My business was doing well since I had no competitors in the region.

“I then spotted an area in our area that had an existing car wash and panel beater. There was a space that people turned into a dump. I then cleaned it so my customers could sit on it.
She added that after cleaning this space, she noticed a beautiful view of Sandon and Alexandra; this is how the name of its cuisine was born.
Modiba said Alex View is more than just a restaurant: it is an experience that celebrates African culture and cuisine.
“I want to run a successful buffet restaurant that showcases African cuisine and makes Alex View a popular tourist attraction. Marapo and pap are not refined foods but are important to African culture. I want to share this with my community and the world.
For Modiba, Alex View is his way of giving back to his community. “I want to empower my community by providing jobs and opportunities. I also want to promote African culture and cuisine, which are often neglected in our society.
