Are you out of cake decorations? Cereal saves the day

If you’re out of cake decorations and don’t know how to make the frosting so it looks attractive, just grab some cereal. Since today’s cereals have become so sweet, topping a cake with them seems like a call of fate. Whether you’re making an easy yellow cake or your everyday chocolate cake, decorating with cereal can create a masterpiece worthy of a special occasion.

Use whole pieces of colorful cereal like Cap’n Crunch Berry or Fruit Loops to create decorative designs with pops of color on a white frosted cake. For cakes with dark frosting, Honeycomb cereal can create striking contrasts and patterns. You can also use cereal to create borders, like on a vanilla iced cake with cocoa puffs lining the edges, or sprinkle the top with crushed cereal or small cereals.

You can also use cereal to write names, create shapes like flowers or stars, or form numbers. Imagine the number one written in Cheerios on a baby’s first birthday cake – adorable! To make your decorating job especially easy, take cereals that already have clearly defined shapes, like Lucky Charms or Trix, and simply press them into your icing. Keep an eye out for holiday shapes and other special editions, such as Franken Berry Cereal, Cap’n Crunch’s Christmas Crunch and heart-shaped Cheerios.

Make cereal cake decorations

If you want to jazz up your cereal-decorated cake even more, consider using the cereal to make cake decorations. Classic Rice Krispies treats – or any other cereal treat – are perfect as edible cake decorations.

Prepare your cereal crunchy treats as usual, let them cool slightly, then get creative with cookie cutters. Cut out a number, a heart or a rocket, because there are no limits here. Simply let your cut shape cool completely, then place it on your cake! You can even stack a few cereal treat shapes to create 3D masterpieces, like a layered flower.

And let’s not just stick to the old Rice Krispies treats. Use Cocoa Krispies to make Chocolate Rice Krispies Treats, add mix-ins like crushed cookies for Oreo Rice Krispies Treats, or make bright and colorful cake decorations using cereal treats with fruity pebbles. Grab a box of cereal and let the most important meal of the day become your most important cake topper.
