BBC Breakfast show collapses as set collapses around star | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV
BBC Breakfast descended into hilarious chaos when a set began to collapse around a reporter, prompting an alarmed reaction.
Correspondent Jane McGovern was on hand to interview the cast of a new stage adaptation of classic 70s sitcom Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em, while presenters Jon Kay and Sarah Campbell introduced the show from the studio. The hit series, which chronicled the calamitous life of hapless Frank Spencer, is being revived as a stage comedy.
Now, more than half a century after the first series aired, actor Sam Denia steps into Frank’s shoes, eager to give Jane a glimpse of the set. However, it was a crew member who ended up showing him around the set and that’s when things took a comical turn.
“He’s put a lot of work into the house, as you can see. Everything’s rock solid,” he boasted, before accidentally knocking over several stair banisters. “Sorry, sorry about that,” he quickly apologized, as Jane couldn’t help but let out a gasp of surprise followed by a laugh.
The misadventures continued when a cupboard door came loose in her hands, prompting Jane to joke: “Totally reliable!” and then a chair she had been offered turned out to have a leg missing. She was then given a humorous warning: “You might want to sit here, but not on that chair either!” reports the Mirror.
It was a playful nod to Frank’s notoriously poor DIY skills, with the crew member joking: “When you have Frank build a house, with his DIY skills, there’s a lot that can go wrong. And they did!”
In the studio, Sarah couldn’t help but say: “You know Michael Crawford did all his own stunts, and in the 70s health and safety maybe wasn’t quite what it is today!” The legendary series may have only lasted 22 episodes, but it quickly became a timeless British classic.
Meanwhile, Sally Nugent’s absence from the show has caused quite a stir after she disappeared a few weeks ago, with Sarah taking her place on the iconic red sofa. Viewers, worried about Sally’s future on the show, have been flooding X with questions.
Last June, Sally was spotted presenting BBC News on One, fuelling speculation that she might branch out. Desperate for answers, one user took to social media to plead: “Has Sally left Breakfast?” while another pressed Jon Kay: “Fine, but does this disrupt my morning viewing when I expect to see you and @sallynugent on the sofa?”
At the time, Jon reassured fans that Sally was not leaving and that the new lunchtime news slot would feature familiar faces like Ben Brown, Nina Warhurst, Tina Daheley and Anna Foster instead.
BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One.
