Brits furious over price of ‘after school bargain’ chocolate bar
Many of us miss running to the corner store after school with change jangling in our pockets.
This modest convenience store was a treasure trove for young people looking to spend their pocket money. And it only took a handful of coins to get a snack and a soft drink without breaking the bank.
But before you get nostalgic, that’s not the case these days. The current cost of living crisis has caused prices to skyrocket, leaving the cost of our choices at exorbitant levels.
And when it comes to chocolate, it’s not just Cadbury’s iconic Freddo that’s causing outrage, another beloved chocolate bar has seen its price rise dramatically. The Euro Shopper candy bar was once a budget-friendly alternative to big brands.
It was known for its 50 cent price tag, listed on its red packaging, and was available in milk, dark and white chocolate. In the 2000s, kids would often buy one with a cheap drink and maybe even a pack of Space Raiders, all for just over a pound.
Those days are long gone, leaving adults who grew up in the 2000s feeling nostalgic and a little betrayed.
In a viral video that has been viewed more than 341,000 times, social media influencer Andrew Barton (ASB) called the hike “the definition of daylight robbery.”
He lamented: “When I was a kid I always got one of those 50p chocolate bars. You get the milk chocolate, the white chocolate or the dark chocolate. They were all 50p. Life was good. Get two for one, or you can buy one and a sports drink, spending just one pound.
However, he revealed with dismay that the price had “slowly started to increase”. Initially going from 50p to 85p, then £1 before reaching the current price of £1.49 which Andrew called “ridiculous”, commenting: “I can’t believe how much they cost NOW “.
However, some astute observers noted that each package had a different weight. According to the Snappy Shopper website, the old all-time favorite still sells for 85p. The 200g variant, which previously sold for £1, has now been increased to £1.59 instead of the advertised £1.49.
This, however, was not enough to appease some – who voiced their opinions in TikTok’s comments section. One user nostalgically mentioned: “A 50p drink and 50p chocolate was the best summer scan for £1.” »
Another user added their ideal frugal lunch combo, saying: “Plus the sports drink with a pack of Space Raiders = school lunch deal,” while someone else remembered the budget-friendly treats: “J ‘I always called it cheap chocolate.’
However, others would rather pay 25p more for a branded bar, as one viewer expressed: “I’d rather pay 25p more for a nice branded bar.”
Euro Shopper has been contacted for comment.
