Euronics, along with the National Plowing Association (NPA) and the Irish Countrywomen’s Association (ICA) are encouraging Westmeath bakers to enter this year’s National Brown Bread Baking Competition, the final of which will take place at the National Plowing Championships this year in September.
The winning brown bread baker will walk away with a €5,000 cash prize and a NEFF oven, while the three finalists will all walk away with a €500 Euronics gift card.
Brown bread is a typical Irish product found in most homes across the country. Everyone has their own recipe and secret ingredient, but if you’re a brown bread enthusiast in Westmeath, make your own version of this classic staple and drop it off at:
Heavins, A1& A2 Shannon Retail Park, Dublin Road, Athlone, Co. Westmeath, N37 E763 next Friday July 19 from 9am to 11am. Bread will not be accepted outside of these hours.
All successful participants will be contacted on August 12 to attend the final. Two semi-finals will take place on September 17 and 18 with the final on the afternoon of September 19 at the National Plowing Championships in Ratheniska, Co Laois.
Euronics Ireland sponsors this iconic competition, and their sponsorship was praised by NPA chief executive Anna May McHugh, who said the first national baking competition was held in ‘Ploughing’ in 1954. “It is “Wonderful to see that the competition is still as popular today as it was then,” she added.
Mary D’Arcy, the new national president of the CIA, spoke at the launch of this year’s competition and said that CIA members “always love participating” in the national baking competition. “I’m sure this year will be no different!”
