Chef Alisa Reynolds is determined to “taste the soul of the rest of the world”.
Hulu’s new travel kitchen series In search of soul food, which premieres June 2, follows Reynolds as she travels the world to explore cooking. In an exclusive look at the trailer above, the Los Angeles owner of My 2 Cents gives fans a taste of what to expect from the series.
“I’m Chef Alisa Reynolds – classically trained, soulful cooking. And I’m on a mission. We are looking for food for the soul. Let’s go,” she says in the preview opening.
As a black chef, Reynolds brings her passion and identity to each of the eight episodes of the series, which was produced by Onyx Collective, a content brand doing projects with creators of color.
“In my restaurant in Los Angeles, I apply my classical training to what I know – soul food – a cuisine created with ingenuity through the struggle that has nourished my people in their most difficult times,” she says. “And I think, just maybe, we’re not the only ones with this bomb ass formula.”
The accomplished chef takes viewers on a journey as she travels all over Peru, Jamaica, South Africa, Italy and more.

In one scene from the trailer, Reynolds takes a bite out of a slice of pizza in Italy. “I feel like I’m tapping into the soul of Naples. Mamma mia!” she said in her best Italian accent.
The restorer also explores her hometown. “People say LA has a lot of flavor and no soul. I disagree,” she says.
Throughout the teaser, Reynolds defines soul food in his own words and keeps an open mind to find new iterations of the cuisine. “It’s about making something out of nothing with food and love in every bite, and I want to taste all of that,” she says.

She discovers meals with a rich history. There, she discovers the “oldest recipe in South Africa” and an 8,000-year-old culinary tradition.
The trailer ends with Reynolds speaking with different people about the power of soul food to stir up happy memories. “We’re trying to do here is like letting people know the depth of these meals,” she says, later adding, “It’s history on a plate.”
