Chinese Dessert Fa Si Xi – NEW Mahjong Themed Dessert Shop in Jalan Besar Featuring “Da Si Xi” Desserts

Wait, another mahjong-themed dessert cafe in Singapore?

Besides Tian Wang 甜旺 at Keong Saik and Wonders – West Wind at Clementi, Fa Si Xi Traditional Chinese Desserts is the latest addition.

But no, you CANNOT play mahjong indoors (I get similar questions quite often).

Located close to Lavender MRT on Level 1 of Boss Hotel, its location is as convenient as it is remarkable, facing Victoria Street.

It occupies a site that once housed the now-defunct Woorinara Korean restaurant.

Bright walls, lighting and tables decorated with mahjong tiles, playing cards and casino chips all contribute to a playful atmosphere.

Guests can dine on the ground floor or in the additional dining area located above the kitchen on the second level.

There are a number of props around, as well as a photo corner.

The menu at Fa Si Xi is varied, divided into categories such as hot dessert, cold dessert, frozen dessert, noodles, appetizers and waffles, complemented by a variety of drinks.

Hot desserts include classics like black sesame paste soup ($4.80), peanut paste soup ($4.80) and an intriguing pistachio paste ($8.80), as well as concoctions such as barley tofu with quail egg ($4.80) and black sticky rice with coconut milk ($4.30).

Their cold dessert selection features options like durian mousse ($11.80), mango with pomelo and sago ($7.80), and durian chendol ice cream ($10.80), which seem more expensive than the average store.

I tried the Da Si Xi platter ($11.80) – a quartet including black sesame paste, peanut paste, curry fish balls and golden sweet potato balls.

Peanut paste was preferable to black sesame, offering a smoother texture, while the latter was rather thick and lumpy.

The curry fish balls weren’t bad, dipped in a robust and spicy curry sauce.

My favorites were the golden sweet potato balls with a crispy exterior and a soft, sweet interior.

Each bite into the lightly fried shell reveals a warm center filled with the sweetness of sweet potatoes.

Tasty noodle dishes at Fa Si Xi, including the Signature Penang Prawn Mee and the Ipoh Hor Fun, which are rich in flavour.

For those looking for savoury delights, the menu includes a range of noodle dishes like the Signature Penang Prawn Mee ($12.80) and the Ipoh Hor Fun ($8.80).

This is accompanied by an assortment of appetizers such as curried fish balls, braised chicken feet and fried shrimp cake.

While there is still room for improvement in terms of food, Fa Si Xi’s thematic style makes it a possible dessert destination for those looking to enjoy traditional Chinese desserts with a twist,
