City Grill Group: €31 million in turnover in the first 6 months, growth of 18%

City Grill Group, the largest restaurant group on the Romanian market, ends the first half of the year with a turnover of 31 million euros, an increase of 18% compared to the same period last year. The group continues to invest in the restaurants in its portfolio as well as in the development of the restaurant and hotel segments.

Thus, the City Grill group invested 1.5 million euros in the first six months of this year. The varied and refined menu, as well as the popularity, the customer-centric approach and the commitment to offering exceptional culinary experiences through a friendly atmosphere and a modern and familiar design in all the group’s restaurants, consolidate its leading position in the Bucharest restaurant market.

According to a survey conducted in April 2024, City Grill Group restaurants are the first choice of 17.3% of respondents and among the top three choices of almost a third of them (31%). Conducted on a representative sample of 550 Bucharest residents, the survey also reveals that more than a third (36%) have a favorite restaurant within the City Grill Group, and 1 in 5 (22.2%) mentioned the group’s restaurants as the destinations they frequented most often in the last 90 days.

When asked about the criteria for choosing a restaurant, Bucharest residents indicated that the restaurant’s atmosphere was the most important criterion. Other important satisfaction factors included the friendliness of the staff, the speed of service and the diversity of the menu.

Customers who prefer City Grill group restaurants are attracted not only by the atmosphere and attractive design, but also by the varied menu, the value for money and the loyalty benefits. Among the favorite restaurants, Caru’ cu Bere comes first with 10.4% of respondents, followed by Hanu’ lui Manuc (8.7%). Hanu’ Berarilor attracts the most loyal customers, while Buongiorno. The younger segment prefers Italian and Pescăruș.

What Bucharesters eat in restaurants: 2 out of 3 Bucharesters choose pizza. Men prefer steak, women pasta.

According to the same study, the culinary preferences of Bucharest residents vary considerably, reflecting the diversity of tastes and dining occasions. Pizza is consumed by about two-thirds of Bucharest residents when dining out, balanced between the sexes, but with over 75% among those under 30. Next come ready meals and steaks. Steaks, hamburgers, soups and shawarma are mainly preferred by men, while women are relatively more attracted to pasta, salads, desserts and seafood.

While pizza is the most consumed food item (64%), City Grill Group customers tend to opt for a more traditional menu, with grilled dishes being the top choice among those visiting the group’s restaurants.

Romanian cuisine appreciated by 9 out of 10 Bucharest residents

Romanian cuisine is popular with 88.4% of the population, followed by Italian cuisine with 64%, followed by Greek cuisine (58.5%) and Turkish cuisine (40.2%). Asian specialty restaurants (Lebanese, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Korean) are also attracting increasing interest from the public in the capital.

How much do Bucharest residents spend on eating out?

When it comes to spending, Bucharest residents have different behaviors depending on the day of the week and the reason for eating out. For weekday lunches, the average amount spent is around 50 lei per person, while weekend meals see a significant increase in the budget, up to 200 lei per person.

Overall, regarding the budget allocated per person, almost half (46.5%) spent less than 100 lei on their last meal at a restaurant, 36% spent between 100 and 199 lei, 13.8% spent more than 200 lei and 3.6% did not specify an individual budget. The average bill in the restaurants of the City Grill group remains constant at around €45.

The study was conducted between 26 and 30 April 2024. Data collection was carried out online on an ESOMAR certified panel. The final sample consisted of 550 Bucharest residents and 2102 loyal customers of the City Grill group via the Out4Food loyalty application. The statistical margin of error is +/- 4.3% for the entire sample, with a confidence level of 95%. Target population: Bucharest and Ilfov. Restaurant consumers in Bucharest, in the last 30 days. Age: 20-60 years.
