Ethiopian agricultural products soar in Chinese market thanks to CIIE
SHANGHAI, June 19, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Ethiopian coffee has rapidly gained ground in the Chinese market in recent years, with sales growing at a staggering rate of 27 percent per year.
This rapid growth has been significantly driven by platforms such as the China International Import Expo and cross-border e-commerce, which serve as effective gateways for foreign brands. China and present many opportunities for Ethiopian businesses.
A notable achievement is Ethiopian coffee brand Gera, which showcased roasted coffee beans at the third CIIE. During the exhibition, the brand’s Yirgacheffe and Sidamo coffees were listed on a major cross-border e-commerce platform, immediately available to consumers.
At the fifth CIIE, Ethiopian Highland coffee, presented in bright orange packaging, attracted attention. After being showcased during an e-commerce livestream during the expo, 17,000 boxes were sold in a single evening. Online sales of Ethiopian coffee jumped 300 percent during the sixth CIIE.
Traditionally, Ethiopian coffee producers and processors accounted for less than 10 percent of profits from the export trade, with the majority of profits coming from distribution and sales. Leveraging the CIIE for cross-border online sales has effectively reduced business costs, benefiting Ethiopian coffee producers and allowing Chinese consumers to enjoy premium coffee beans at more affordable prices.
Witnessing the growing popularity of Ethiopian coffee among Chinese consumers, Tefera Derbew Yimam, Ethiopian ambassador to China, expressed his great joy. He noted that China has become one of the main importers of Ethiopian coffee. Ethiopian coffees have received rave reviews at the CIIE over the years, prompting many companies to showcase their products at the event. “The embassy will continue to facilitate the participation of Ethiopian companies in the exhibition,” Yimam said.
The coffee trade is only one aspect of commercial relations between China And Ethiopia. Products like sesame seeds and green beans Ethiopia have also made their way to supermarkets, stores and retail markets China.
At the sixth edition of the exhibition, Ethiopian sesame trader Duka Engineering & Trading Plc entered into a preliminary cooperation agreement with Shanghai Ruifu Sesame Oil Co Ltd, which would purchase 6,000 tonnes of sesame seeds.
In October 2023, Ethiopia And China have transformed their bilateral relationship into an ironclad strategic partnership. In a joint statement, China expressed its desire to continue to encourage and support Ethiopian exports to Chinaincluding agricultural and food products.
As the Chinese market is a key driver of Ethiopian exports, Ethiopia Distinctive offerings are expected to make a splash at this year’s exhibition, presenting vast business opportunities for its companies.
