Fast food chain launches kids’ offer to rival McDonald’s Happy Meal – it’s £1 cheaper and just in time for school holidays

A fast food chain has launched a new offering aimed at children to rival McDonald’s Happy Meal.

Popeyes has confirmed that its new Poppy Meal chicken sandwich will be available from this week – just in time for the school holidays.

The New Orleans-born brand said the meal will include a mini chicken sandwich, a small salad or fries and a fruit sprout.

The sandwich features fresh marinated chicken served with crisp lettuce, with the option of mayonnaise or ketchup, in a brioche-style bun.

To celebrate the latest launch, the Poppy Meal Chicken Sandwich is just £1.99 this week, until Sunday 28th July.

From Monday 29 July, the normal price will be £2.99, Popeyes said.

Currently, McDonald’s is also offering a deal on its Happy Meal, which usually retails for £3.99 but is now £1.99.

The offer comes as McDonald’s launches its Despicable Me 4 Happy Meal to mark the film’s arrival in theaters.

The meal now also includes one of two books and one of 12 toys.

The £1.99 Happy Meal offer is available via the McDonald’s app until July 31.

With no deals at either fast food chain, Popeyes’ new kids’ deal is £1 cheaper than McDonald’s Happy Meal.

The McDonald’s Happy Meal features a hamburger served with kids’ fries, apple slices, a choice of beverage and a toy.

It is also possible to swap the burger for four or six chicken nuggets, fish fingers or vegetarian dips.

Popeyes’ kids range also includes other items such as the Poppy Meal Wrap which includes a chicken tender, lettuce, creamy mayonnaise in a soft toasted tortilla with regular fries and a drink.

Kids can also get the 2 Tenders Poppy meal which includes two hand-breaded chicken breast fillets, fries and a drink.

All Poppy meals will also include a set of colored pencils and an activity sheet, the fast food chain said.

Popeyes entered the UK market in 2021 and has proven to be a hit with hungry customers ever since.

In just 30 months, the brand has opened over 38 restaurants across the UK.

The company plans to reach the 60-restaurant mark by the end of 2024.

Earlier this month, another American fast food chain, Dave’s Hot Chicken, announced plans to open 60 restaurants in the UK and Ireland.

The brand, known in the United States for its big burgers, tenders and spicy chicken bites, also offers sides like homemade kale salad, creamy mac and cheese and crispy, seasoned fries.

The chain’s chicken comes in seven spice levels, from zero to extra spicy, the latter requiring a signed waiver because of its intense heat.

Dave’s Hot Chicken has partnered with the Azzurri Group to lead its UK rollout.

The first restaurant is expected to open in London in the first quarter of 2025.
