The results, published in the review Hypertension, were also to be presented to the epidemiology and prevention / the way of life of the American Heart Association and scientific sessions of cardiometabolic health in New Orleans.
Manganese, selenium, magnesium and copper are essential metals whose antioxidation and anti-inflammatory properties have been demonstrated to protect themselves from cardiovascular disease. Previous research has linked higher levels of manganese to a lower risk of preeclampsia, or to high blood pressure during pregnancy. In the new study, the researchers wanted to know if higher levels of these metals circulated in a woman’s blood during pregnancy could influence the risk of developing blood pressure raised later in life.
“People are constantly exposed to heavy metals and trace elements, and many research has shown that exposure to these metals and elements can have an impact on cardiovascular health, in particular hypertension,” said Dr. Mingyu Zhang, author of the study, in a press release. Zhang is an epidemiologist and medical instructor at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and the Harvard Medical School, both in Boston.
Zhang and his colleagues analyzed the data of 493 women enrolled in the Viva project, a study underway on women and children in the east of Massachusetts which were launched in 1999. Using blood samples collected between 1999 and 2002 during the early stages of women, researchers measured concentrations of non -essential metals, in particular locks, copper barium, magnesium, Selenium and Zinc. They also measured the folate and vitamin B12.
Almost 20 years later, between 2017 and 2021, the researchers measured blood pressure for the participants, who were then on average 51 years. Participants were considered to be suffering from high blood pressure if their measurements were 130/80 millimeters of mercury (MMHG) or more, or if they have declared having taken medication to control their blood pressure. According to the AHA and the American College of Cardiology, the blood pressure is considered normal if systolic reading (the upper number) is less than 120 mmHg and the diastolic (the lower number) is less than 80 mmHg.
For women whose blood rates of copper doubled during pregnancy, the risk of having high blood pressure in the forties was 25% lower. A doubling of manganese during pregnancy resulted in a 20%lower risk. Looking at the combination of copper, manganese, selenium and zinc, the more the levels found during pregnancy are high, the lower the risk of high blood pressure in living in life. There was no link between non -essential metals and the risk of blood pressure.
Higher levels of vitamin B12 during pregnancy were also associated with a risk of lower life of high blood pressure. Women with double the quantity of B12 during pregnancy had systolic blood pressure systems which was on average 3.64 mmhg lower and diastolic measurements on average 2.52 mmHg lower than those of their peers with lower levels of B12.
Since the researchers did not analyze where women obtained their vitamins and minerals, such as food or food supplements, they warned that their results should not be interpreted as recommendations.
But, said Zhang: “Optimizing these essential metals, minerals and vitamins, in particular copper, manganese and vitamin B12, during pregnancy can offer protective advantages against hypertension in quarantine, a particularly critical period for the future cardiovascular risk of women later.”
Additional research, including clinical trials, he said, is necessary to determine the optimal food intake of these minerals and micronutrients. Researchers finally hope to identify women at high risk of developing blood pressure raised later in life and intervening during pregnancy, either with increased nutrition or supplements.
