Grilled Cheese Sandwiches Like No Other at the Wisconsin State Fair
These are not your ordinary grilled cheese sandwiches!
Fairgoers will have the opportunity to sample some of Wisconsin’s finest artisanal cheeses in the Wisconsin Products Pavilion at the Wisconsin State Fair. Three Wisconsin cheesemakers will showcase their best cheeses as part of the Real Wisconsin Cheese Grill’s Blue-Ribbon Cheese Special of the Day sandwiches.
This is the second year the dairy competition-winning cheese will be sold in grilled cheese sandwiches during the Wisconsin State Fair, Aug. 1-11.
Lake Country Dairy Smoked Pepper Fontal, August 6
Lake Country Dairy’s Schuman Artisan Smoky Pepper Fontal Cheese was awarded Best Semi-Soft Flavored Cheese at the 2023 Wisconsin State Fair Dairy Competition. The award-winning cheese is created with milk from dairy farms located within 50 miles of the Lake Country Dairy plant in Turtle Lake, Wisconsin.
“…we are thrilled to showcase our award-winning Fontal Smoky Pepper at the Real Wisconsin Cheese Grill this year. There’s nothing better than seeing your cheese consistently win awards at the state, national and international levels,” said Gary Gosda, plant manager.
Decatur Dairy Dill Havarti, August 7
Decatur Dairy’s dill havarti is best in class for flavored havarti. Master cheesemaker Steve Stettler said Decatur Dairy’s grilled havarti sandwiches are a hit with customers at Decatur Dairy’s Brodhead, Wisconsin, cheese shop.
“It’s truly an honor to have our cheese consistently placed in the state fair competition, especially with all the cheesemaking talent in Wisconsin,” Stettler said. “We’re honored to have been selected for one of the Blue Ribbon Grilled Cheese Sandwiches.”
Brick of the Buholzer Brothers, August 8
Buholzer Brothers Brick was best in class for brick and muenster cheese at the 2023 Wisconsin State Fair dairy competition. These Monroe cheesemakers have a history of winning awards with their brick cheese. The product won back-to-back honors at the Wisconsin State Fair in 2023 and 2022, and took first and third place at the World Championship Cheese Contest in 2018 and 2019, respectively.
The Real Wisconsin Cheese Grill is located in the Wisconsin Products Pavilion and is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. during the fair. Blue Ribbon cheese sandwiches will be available while supplies last. Proceeds from the grill are reinvested into dairy education and promotion at the fair and help support scholarships for youth pursuing careers in the dairy industry.
“For the second year, we are featuring award-winning cheeses from the Wisconsin State Fair Dairy Competition at the Real Wisconsin Cheese Grill,” said Nicole Barlass, chair of the Wisconsin State Fair Dairy Promotion Board. “This idea was introduced last year and we were pleased to offer fairgoers the opportunity to sample a top-notch cheese at the fair. With over 600 styles, types and varieties of cheese produced in Wisconsin, we hope this experience will encourage fairgoers to seek out other award-winning Wisconsin cheeses and dairy products at their local grocery store.”
All winning cheeses and dairy products from the 2024 Dairy Competition will be on display in the Wisconsin Products Pavilion during the fair.
