Handcrafted wooden items available at the Farmers Market

WASHINGTON COURT HOUSE — Despite Memorial Day Weekend’s “official summer” designation, it’s still spring and produce available at the Fayette County Farmer’s Market is still limited…we have radishes, leafy greens , green onions and a few others. first harvests. The strawberries arrived early this year and are already finished for the season. People ask when we’ll have green beans and tomatoes…these summer favorites will be even more special because you’ll have to wait.

In the meantime we have many other suppliers including Debbie from ‘Wood by DW’. Ms. Welch, a lifelong WCH resident and graduate of WCH schools, describes herself as having an instinct for repairing things, including machines (something I have no ability for). When she was little, she helped her father around the house, holding the flashlight when he repaired a pipe and undoubtedly learning something about household repairs and the tools associated with those repairs. When she wanted a skateboard, she took apart her roller skates to design what she wanted.

She later worked for 15 years for French Hardware, doing whatever work was needed, including cutting steel and glass. We know her for the wooden crafts she sells at the market and other places. Her items vary depending on what customers seem to want, but she has made a number of items as special orders for me and others. It’s fun to hear him talk about his tools and especially his saws (scroll, table and miter). Stop by and check out his wooden crafts, and if you’d like to make something, even if it’s not available at his booth, talk to him about creating something for you! And while you’re there, discover the crochet items (baby and kitchen, fun and practical) made by Frances, her very energetic and endearing mother. Well done to the Welch family!

The Carnegie Public Library Mobile Bike will be at the market and visitors will have the opportunity to check out Tony’s Traveling Tales, borrow or purchase books, pick up a copy of the library’s newsletter and learn more about the library’s apps and digital resources! Our elementary school children shopping with their parents at this week’s market can stop by the children’s activity table to make a colorful vegetarian magnet with Ms. Debra.

The Market is open on Saturday mornings from 8:30 a.m. to noon. It is located in the municipal parking lot at the corner of South Main and East East streets. SNAP EBT food benefit cards and credit/debit cards are accepted. Those who use the SNAP EBT card for food purchases receive matching dollar “Produce Perks” tokens ($1 for $1), valid only for fruits, vegetables and food production plants. So, “buy one, get one” for up to $25 each market day. Five-dollar coupons will again be available to Fayette County Farm Bureau members at each Saturday market; these can be spent at the Wednesday and Saturday markets.
