NOW, AT THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR, NUTRITIONISTS ARE ENCOURAGING PARENTS AND CHILDREN TO FEED THEIR CHILDREN WITH HEALTHY MEALS. THIS SUMMER. CAMILLA MARTIN, NUTRITIONIST AT UW HEALTH IN MADISON, joins us this afternoon. THANK YOU FOR JOINING US HERE. THIS AFTERNOON. LET’S TALK ABOUT THIS SUMMER TREND WHERE MANY PEOPLE TEND TO GET AWAY FROM A HEALTHY DIET AND THE IMPORTANCE OF KEEPING CHILDREN, ESPECIALLY OUR CHILDREN, ON THIS PATH. This is really important because it’s so easy to get off schedule and kids really thrive on schedules. SO THE FIRST ADVICE I LIKE TO GIVE IS TO TRY TO STAY ON SCHEDULE, TRY TO STICK TO REGULAR MEAL AND SNACK TIMES BECAUSE THIS CAN ENCOURAGE MORE VARIETY FOR EACH OF THOSE MEAL TIMES, TRY TO HAVE AT LEAST THREE FOOD GROUPS FOR SNACKS. TRY TO HAVE AT LEAST TWO AND HELP THE KIDS COMPLETE THE OPTIONS IN DIFFERENT FOOD GROUPS SO WE CAN STILL GET VARIETY. BECAUSE VARIETY WILL BE KEY. YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT THESE FOOD GROUPS, ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT, FRUITS AND VEGETABLES. HOW TO INTEGRATE THOSE FOR CHILDREN? CHILDREN THEREFORE NEED FIVE SERVINGS OF FRUITS AND VEGETABLES PER DAY, BUT MOST DO NOT ACHIEVE THESE GOALS. SO I ALWAYS LIKE TO TALK TO THEM ABOUT HOW WE CAN HELP RESPOND TO THEM, BECAUSE IF THEY’RE GOING TO PROPOSE IDEAS, THEY WILL BE MORE MOTIVATED TO FILL UP THOSE FROZEN AND CANNED FRUITS AND VEGETABLES. GREAT OPTIONS. AND IF WE CAN PREPARE THE FRUITS AND VEGETABLES AND PERHAPS A FUN SUN TO GO WITH THEM IN ADVANCE, THEN IT WILL BE EASIER TO ACCESS TO THE CHILDREN, ESPECIALLY IF THEY ARE AWAY FROM A CAREGiver. ANY SPECIAL TIPS FOR PREPARING MEALS, ESPECIALLY CUTTING THINGS IN ADVANCE? INVOLVING CHILDREN AS MUCH AS WE CAN. IF THEY CAN DO SIMPLE THINGS LIKE MAYBE A KNIFE IS TOO COMMON FOR A YOUNGER CHILD, BUT OKAY FOR AN OLDER CHILD. Maybe they can help mix things in the bowl. ENGAGE THEM IN THIS PROCESS AND BE READY TO GO. AND IN THE FRIDGE SO IT’S REALLY EASY TO GRAB. AND I KNOW THAT PLANNING IS IMPORTANT. But is it okay, if you deviate a little from this program, as long as you can come back to it, everything is fine. If we move away from it a little. SUMMER IS ALSO ABOUT FUN AND SOMETIMES FUN MEANS OUR SCHEDULE WILL BE OFF. IF THIS MEANS WE CAN PARTICIPATE IN AN ACTIVITY THAT WE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO SIGN UP FOR OTHERWISE, MAYBE IT MEANS WE CAN GO TO THE FARMERS MARKET AND THAT WILL MEAN WE WILL EAT A SLIGHTLY OUT OF SCHEDULE BREAKFAST . . IT’S GOOD. Going to the farmers’ market always means supporting our local economy, by always bringing good, healthy and fresh fruits and vegetables, always good for the environment. So it’s good to get away from some of these things to enjoy them. Um, so we’re just going to work around this and go back to the schedule. THE NEXT TIME. GIVE YOURSELF SOME GRACE. ABSOLUTELY. ALWAYS. ALL RIGHT. CAMILLA MARTIN, NUTRITIONIST WITH UW MADISON, UW HEALTH IN MADISON, THANK YOU FOR JOINING US HERE
