Here’s the scoop: Finalists are in the running for South Florida’s best ice cream
One of the best ways to cool down on a hot summer day is with a few scoops of your favorite ice cream. Whether served in a cup, a crispy waffle cone, or a dish over a banana split dipped in hot chocolate, this sweet and creamy treat is a surefire way to beat the heat.
But even more important than choosing one (or more!) of the many tempting flavors like cookies and cream, mint chocolate chip, or butter pecan, is deciding where to find them.
With July designated as National Ice Cream Month, we asked you, our readers, to nominate your favorite ice cream shops in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties for this month’s Best of South Florida Dining series.
After hundreds of votes were counted, here are the top five nominated shops serving up some jaw-dropping cold creations, in alphabetical order:
Tamarac resident Lisa Shaw likes to order a cup of chocolate chip ice cream at Jaxson’s.
“It’s delicious, dense and creamy, and the variety of flavors means there’s something for everyone,” she wrote in her nomination. “Their chocolate chip and double chocolate chip are exceptional, with thick chunks of chocolate embedded in the ice cream. Their cherry vanilla is also a little slice of heaven. The serving size is huge, but then again, who can stop at just one scoop?”
When nominating Razzleberry’s, Hollywood resident Joe Agri wrote that “the variety of flavors and the changing special flavors every week make this place stand out from all the others.”
Her favorite flavor? Butter pecan in a cup or cone.
Wilton Creamery fans highlighted the store’s limited batches featuring “unique,” “creative” and “unusual” ingredients in their nominations.
“Wilton Creamery is awesome! Their ice cream is so creamy,” wrote Fort Lauderdale resident Jeffrey McKinley. “They always have boutique flavors that they only make in very small batches, like 5 gallons. These are usually my favorites because they are so unique and ALWAYS tasty! Their dog-friendly flavors are also a hit with my best friend!”
Fresh ingredients and homemade taste were frequently mentioned by those who submitted Lily to the contest.
“This ice cream is incredibly creamy, with no hint of frosting,” wrote Delray Beach resident Amanda Christon. “Made in-house, they created vanilla and chocolate ice creams that are perfect as a base for their amazing flavors! My favorite is the cookies and cream, it’s to die for.”
When it comes to ice cream, Connie Valli of Boca Raton loves Whit’s chocolate flavor. She even adds hot fudge on top to double the chocolate.
“The quality is great, they always have fun and exciting flavors that change weekly and daily,” she wrote in her nomination. “They also have great ice cream sandwiches and ice cream cakes. A great selection of flavors in pints as well. It’s simply an addictive place.”
