Horrible cow attack that killed BBC Farming Star | TV & Radio | Showbiz and television

Derek Roan, a well -known Scottish farmer who appeared on this agricultural life of the BBC was killed in a tragic agricultural incident. The 71 -year -old man died following an attack by a cow in his Barnbarroch farm managed by the family near Dalbeattie in Dumfries and Galloway, an incident that has sent shock to the agricultural community.

The fatal accident occurred on June 19, 2022, when Mr. Roan tried to move a cow of Galloway beef and his newborn veal to the main herd. The animal, weighing around 550 kg (1,200 lb), had recently given birth. This is a time when cows are often particularly protective and unpredictable.

It is believed that the cow, with its calf, had become separated from the herd a few days before the incident due to feeding problems with the calf, which had about a week at the time. At 4 p.m. that day, Mr. Roan’s son saw his father’s bike in a field with indicators and assumed that he was working nearby.

About half an hour later, he found Mr. Roan lying on his side with facial injuries and an ambulance was called. He was urgently transported to the hospital but died later in Dumfries and Galloway Infimmy.

According to an investigation by fatal accident held at Dumfries Sheriff Court, Mr. Roan underwent a serious thoracic trauma during the incident and unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. The sheriff Joanna McDonald, who presided over the case, concluded that there was “no reasonable precaution” which could have prevented tragedy and had found no defects in farm work systems.

Mr. Roan was a very experienced stockman, well accompanied by the dangers of livestock handling. He had spent his whole life in living and working at Barnbarroch Farm, managing the company alongside his wife and his two sons. In addition to Barnbarroch, Derek was one of the two dairy farms in his family and helped manage his successful milk delivery business, which is still in progress.

The family’s appearances on this agricultural life have introduced viewers across the United Kingdom to the realities, challenges and daily rewards of the management of a farm in activity. The series has built an audience for its frank representation of rural life and deep ties within agricultural families.

Tributes have flocked throughout the agricultural community, honoring Mr. Roan as a dedicated family man and a respected figure in Scottish agriculture.

In a press release published at the time, his family said: “We are completely devastated and always in shock from what happened and it will take us a while for us to have it.
