How Anthony Michael Hall’s Birthday Party Included a Breakfast Club Reunion (Exclusive)

Anthony Michael Hall made the most of his 56th birthday!

The actor, who stars in the new Netflix film Trigger Warningreveals to PEOPLE in this week’s issue how her last memorable interaction with a fan led to an impromptu birthday dinner with her co-stars The Breakfast Club.

Hall said he was spoiled for choice when he hosted a signing at Comic-Con on his birthday last April: “I had three birthday cakes (from fans). I thought, ‘I should do more signings on my birthday.'”

Those weren’t the only treats that made Hall’s birthday so special, he also celebrated his big day by reuniting with Molly Ringwald, Ally Sheedy and Judd Nelson from The Breakfast Club.

“Judd, Molly, her husband and a few other friends went out to dinner after the book signing,” he says. “It was really nice.”

Hall says he broke tradition and paid for the entire table even though it was his birthday. He jokes: “You know what? I like to keep people on their toes.”

“It was really awesome, but it was cool to see Molly and share pictures of our kids,” said Hall, who shares 13-month-old Michael Anthony Hall II with wife Lucia Oskerova.

“Judd is still John Bender,” he adds. “He’s an original. He really is. I love that. He’s kind of like Hunter Thompson, kind of like… He’s got so many different interests. He’s a really bright guy. I mean, he’s really, really smart.”

Hall shares some of his “latest” below.

The last time I was star struck

During filming Community On the Paramount lot, I snuck out to watch the Clint Eastwood movie J. Edgar. After about 10 minutes of spying on him, I got caught and fired. It sounds more serious than it was, but it was funny.

The last time I grimaced

Every time I’m on TV it’s a little weird, like looking at yearbook photos. I literally went through puberty on film in the early ’80s; that was painful enough.

Last moment of gratitude

My wife, son and I were coming back from Toronto and it was very hectic. I had five bags and our dog with us, but just being with them… Not to sound corny, but I’ve waited a long time and when you start a family, it’s the best thing ever.
