Diners looking for unique foods that are hard to find in restaurants may be happy to hear that an Asian-style night market is set to open in Mississauga this month.

The Mississauga Asian Night Market 2024, a three-day celebration of food and culture, kicks off Friday, July 19 and runs through Sunday, July 21. The event will make its first appearance in the city and will take place in Square One’s P6 parking lot, directly across from the Food District.

“There are a few night markets, but this one is interesting because the focus is more on food,” Ruifeng (Ricky) Zhen, the event organizer, told INsauga.com.

“There will be many unique food vendors and some dishes will be specially prepared for the event only.”

Zhen told INsauga.com that the event began to come to life after speaking with Ward 6 Councilor Joe Horneck about the need for more Asian-themed festivals and events in the city to mark Asian Heritage Month in the spring.

“May is Asian Heritage Month and Mississauga doesn’t have a lot of celebrations here and I talked to (Horneck) about it. I said, ‘Why don’t we have a night market to promote Asian culture?’ and he said that’s a great idea.”

Zhen had originally planned to hold the event in May, but decided to postpone it until July so there would be no overlap with Carassauga, where he helps run the China pavilion. He’s now optimistic that the summer date will be a good fit for families looking for a unique activity.

“The kids are out of school, so parents can bring their kids,” he said.

As for food, the event website says attendees can expect takoyaki (fried octopus), Hong Kong egg waffles, Filipino snacks and street food, Uncle Tetsu’s Japanese cheesecake, Beijing Tanghulu (candied fruit skewers), bubble tea, grilled oysters, shaved ice, fried chicken and more.

Live entertainment including traditional dancing, appearances by local artists and a DJ during the evening hours will also be on the programme.

Zhen also said visitors will be able to shop at the market, as vendors will offer handicrafts, accessories and cultural works. The market will also feature claw machines, so younger visitors (and anyone who loves toys) can take home something fun.

There will also be a children’s area with a bouncy castle.

Entry to the market is free.

Ultimately, Zhen says he’s excited to bring something unique to the city he calls home.

“There are things you can find at night markets that you can’t find at restaurants. We wanted to bring that to Mississauga,” he says.
