Hyderabad: Due to the concerns about the quality of dairy analogues, which are non -milk substitutes that are used to replace dairy products and a possible increase in their consumption during this holiday season, Hyderabad food regulators have been alerted to intensify surveillance on such products.

The regulatory authorities of all states have been responsible for intensifying the monitoring of dairy analogues throughout the month of March. The objective is to prevent food adulteration and poor labeling during festivals, when demand for such products should reach the high sky.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), in its directive, said that “taking into account the increase in the consumption of dairy products during the holiday season, the current surveillance will remain focused on the dairy analog this month”.

In recent months, dairy analogues, in particular analog baskets, have been criticized about its potential health risks. The Paneer analog is made up of vegetable oils, starch and additives and is increasingly used in food and street restaurants, which has raised questions about safety and lack of standardization.

Some of the other examples of dairy analogues, in which milk has been replaced by non -milk products includes soy milk, almond milk, analog basket, vegan yogurt alternatives based on soy, almond and coconut, vegan cheese and even coconut milk.

In accordance with food security regulations and standards (food products and food additives), dairy analogues are products where non -milk constituents replace the components of milk partially or entirely but resemble milk or dairy products in appearance, texture and functionality.

Dairy analogues are not considered to be milk, dairy products or composite dairy products. When standardized dairy products are modified in terms of composition by replacing the main constituents of milk such as milk fat or milk proteins with vegetable oil, fats or proteins, the resulting product is classified as analog.

The FSSAI defines “the dairy analog” as a product in which the constituents which do not derive from milk take the place, in part or in all, of any constituent of milk and the final product resembles, and / or functionally, milk or milk or composite dairy product as defined in these regulations.

According to sub-regulation 2.1.1.3 (f) FSS regulations (food and food additives), 2011, non-dairy products should not be distorted such as milk or milk.
