I tried 6 chocolate ice creams and there was one that clearly won.
It delivers a powerful and bold chocolate flavor.
A scoop of chocolate ice cream ranks high on my list of the best foods. Of all the possible ice cream flavors, it’s hands down my favorite. Luckily, it’s relatively easy to find, and most ice cream shops and ice cream brands taste pretty good. But, as a die-hard fan, I wanted to find the best one. Which chocolate ice cream offered the most chocolate flavor, but also the creamy, rich texture that good ice cream has? I tried six brands and found my winner.
How I chose ice cream
I mentioned that chocolate ice cream is easy to find, but other ingredients are often added, like brownie pieces, fudge swirls, and chocolate chips. I did my best to avoid these varieties so that I could judge only on the chocolate flavor. I only chose ice creams available at major grocery chains, and all were under $6 a carton.
How I tested ice cream
Luckily, testing ice cream is a pretty fun activity, and it was easy to recruit a handful of testers, including kids and adults. We took the ice creams out of the freezer and waited five minutes before pouring them into separate, unlabeled bowls. We let the ice cream warm up a bit, then judged the flavor and texture of each. We were looking for a strong chocolate flavor with a subtle sweetness and a creamy, luxurious texture. Here are the results.
The Best Commercial Chocolate Ice Creams, Ranked
6th place: Kemps
If you love chocolate, but don’t love If you love chocolate, Kemps might just be your winner. Testers found the light and airy texture intriguing, but the flavor too subtle. Its lack of cocoa flavor even led one tester to declare, “This can’t be chocolate!” It wasn’t our top pick, but it could be a good option for an ice cream sandwich or other frozen dessert.
5th place: Blue Rabbit
Its oddly airy texture and extreme sweetness drove my child tester crazy. She loved how “chewy” it was (her words) and asked for a second scoop. My older testers agreed that the texture was fun and enjoyable, but it didn’t have the chocolatey taste they were looking for. Bottom line, save this one for the kids and buy yourself the winning pint.
4th place: Edy’s
Some ice creams are hits all on their own. Pairing them with anything would be cruel. Edy’s isn’t. While it was enjoyable, testers agreed that it didn’t have much chocolate flavor or creaminess compared to other brands we tried. One tester described it as “soft and easy to eat,” which I took to mean “it’s good.” We all agreed that it would be a perfect accompaniment to cake or as a base for a sundae.
3rd place: Breyers
This ice cream was one of the most colorful of the bunch, so we expected an equally intense chocolate flavor. While we did taste chocolate, it wasn’t to the same degree as our winner. It was also creamy, but certainly not as rich and smooth as our top two brands. That said, we liked it, especially for the price, but not as much as our runner-up and winner.
2nd place: Tillamook
Tillamook makes great ice cream, and their chocolate flavor doesn’t disappoint. This was one of the creamiest versions we’ve tried, with a luxurious texture that made us all want to slow down and enjoy it. The chocolate was good, probably pleasing to many palates, which is why this is easily the “everyone will love it” choice. If you’re going to please a crowd, this is the chocolate ice cream you should go for.
Winner: Häagen-Dazs
It’s decadent, it’s delicious, it’s truly the perfect chocolate ice cream. This was the only one on the list that offered a bold, intense chocolate flavor. It was creamy, rich, and every bite was “perfect,” one tester said. Häagen-Dazs, which also won our vanilla ice cream taste test, is the most expensive of the bunch, but we all agreed that a small scoop was enough to satisfy our chocolate ice cream cravings. If you’re looking for a classic scoop of chocolate ice cream, this is hands down the best!
