Garten’s tomato soup recipe starts by sautéing onions in a casserole dish, then adding garlic, chicken broth, a can of crushed tomatoes, salt, pepper and a pinch of saffron for that earthy flavor . You can use an immersion blender to get that super creamy consistency, but Garten chooses to leave the soup as is to allow the distinct flavors to exist and blend together.
In another pot, cook a small portion of orzo pasta until almost cooked, then add the pasta to the soup to finish cooking.
