Inside Tapori, the new Nepalese restaurant on rue H Street
The opening of this Friday on H Street is a new South Asian restaurant, called Tapori. HEdded by Dante Datta and Suresh Sundas, these two are well known in the city under the name of former Rasika as well as the co -owners of Daru, a popular Indian restaurant that obtained several notable headlongs media as well as Michelin gourmet bib list.
On its goals for the restaurant, which is barely a Mile de Daru, Datta said that it hoped to create a “dynamic and friendly” space with a kitchen inspired by street food found across Nepal, as well as in the south of India.
The space is equipped with an open kitchen, comfortable stands of stand style with a common table of 20 people in the center and a bar which is notably larger than that found in Daru.
The name, “Tapori”, results in “vagabond” or “Rowdy” in Hindi, but it is also a reference to the Tapori subculture in Mumbai. Colorful wall painting near the center of the restaurant is also an apparent wink to the romantic comedy film in Indian Hindi 1995, “Rangeela”, which presents a protagonist from Tapori.
Sundas told Wopt that their approach to Tapori is “absolutely different” from Daru, saying: “Absolutely, you feel like going elsewhere who is not close to Daru and something different.”
While the “Indian” food of Daru and the Tapori menus have some similarities – such as Puri and Bison Momo – Sundas said that a few notable elements that show their differences include the slow cook powder Pakku Biryani, the lamb crepe, a stern pommel and a backup, Sambar closes (vegetable stew) and coconut chutney with tomato chutney.
For those who have a sweet tooth, do not miss the Kulfi – a traditional frozen and creamy dessert served on a stick like a popsicle, but based on condensed milk, pistachios, saffron and cardamom.
Tapori long awaited is now open to the public and can be found at 600 hours Street NE in DC, located between the whole food market and solid state books.
