Lotus Foods wins GOLD Regenerative Organic Certified® (ROC®); Upgrades from SILVER

RICHMOND, Calif. —

Lotus Foods Organic White and Brown Basmati Rice has achieved ROC® Gold for Silver. Lotus Foods Basmati Rice is now the 6th product in the world to meet the rigorous standards required to be ROC® Gold certified, making Lotus Foods Basmati Rice the first and only ROC® Gold rice.

The ROC® Pillars recognize and promote challenging regenerative agricultural practices that support a healthy planet and a just society.

ROC® Gold level means 100% of farms must meet the highest standards for regenerative organic production across all three ROC® pillars: soil health, animal welfare and social equity. In line with these pillars, ROC® aims to:

  • Increasing soil organic matter over time and sequestering carbon below and above ground, which could be a tool for mitigating climate change.
  • Improve animal welfare.
  • Ensure economic stability and fairness for farmers, ranchers and workers.

This achievement indicates the highest level of collaboration between the brand and supplier. Lotus Foods is highlighting this collaboration today on the eve of Natural Products Expo East 2023 to elevate the conversation about ROC® and the company’s efforts to lead the way in rice growing practices that simultaneously mitigate climate change, promote resilience of farmers and empower women.

“We are very proud of the entire Pratithi Organic Foods team,” says Caryl Levine, co-founder of Lotus Foods. “Their farming families demonstrate that implementing more sustainable, inherently regenerative rice growing practices, like the intensive rice farming system, which we call More Crop Per Drop®, can be a win-win situation. Farmers improve their yields and profitability, while improving their soils and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The Founder and CEO of Pratithi Organic Foods, Mr. Tapan Ray, plays a pivotal role in the growth trajectory of this sustainable food industry, through his determination, drive and leadership. With over 25 years of experience in organic farming and fair trade practices, he aims to make India one of the world’s leading destinations for sourcing organic raw materials.

“It took years of concerted effort from the Pratithi team and its farmers to achieve this great feat. We are very grateful to Ken and Caryl who have been our continued support and great motivation to continue the ROA/ROC program with our great focus. As we have now achieved GOLD, we will always try to excel in this field and meet everyone’s expectations, including the ROA team as well as our partner Lotus Foods, consumers and our farmers.

Lotus Foods offers a variety of organic and ancient rice, in addition to basmati. Their authentic Indian basmati rice is grown on family farms in North India. The long, thin beans have a delicate aroma and chewy texture. Once cooked, the grains almost double in length. Basmati rice is known for its aroma, flavor and texture. It is often served with Indian cuisine and is one of the most popular rices in the world. Basmati rice has a lower glycemic index, lower arsenic levels, more fiber and more calories than white rice.

Lotus Foods Organic Basmati Rice is available at lotusfoods.com, Amazon, Whole Foods and at retail grocery stores nationwide.

Basmati rice represents 2.1% of total rice production. In 2022, the global basmati rice market was worth approximately $6.09 billion. It is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.1% between 2023 and 2028, reaching a value of approximately $6.87 billion by 2028. Source.
