Muesli is a simple way to meet nutritional needs
Muesli is a whole grain cereal created around 1900 by a Swiss doctor to meet the nutritional needs of his patient. Like granola, muesli consists of whole grains, nuts, fruits and seeds. However, muesli is not cooked like granola.
Granola usually contains sugar or syrup and oil to hold it together when baking. When we eliminate sugars and fats from our diet, raw muesli is a great option.
I enjoy the convenience of putting it together. It can be prepared the day before, making it easy to take out the next morning. And there are also benefits to eating raw, plant-based foods.
The muesli formula is simple to follow, select a whole grain like oatmeal. Then add seeds, like chia or flax. Next, add nuts like walnuts or almonds. You can add dried or fresh fruit, or a combination of both. I add spices that enhance the flavor and also have good health benefits.
I often take this mix with me to work and it’s a nutritious addition to any lunch box. Muesli offers all the satisfaction of granola, without the sugar and oil. And the ease of assembly is unmatched.
Make this popular European breakfast part of your morning routine. Enjoy fresh dishes!
muesli
1/4 cup uncooked old-fashioned rolled oats
1 to 2 tablespoons ground flax seeds
2 walnut halves, chopped
1 pitted date, diced
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon amla powder (optional)
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
3/4 cup fresh blueberries or 1 sliced banana
1/2 cup milk of your choice
In a bowl, pot or other container, add the oats, ground flaxseed, walnuts, date, ground cinnamon, amla powder, if using, and ground ginger. Stir to combine. Cover with plastic wrap or a lid so you don’t eat right away.
When eating, add fresh fruit and milk. Makes 1 serving.
