The grilled cheese sandwich can be as traditional as food, but it drew rapid attention before the National Day of Grilled Cheese on Saturday.

The meal of choice for the NASA Suni Williams astronaut after she and her compatriot Astronaut butch Wilmore returned home from nine months in space? A grilled cheese sandwich. It’s “something that reminds you of the house,” said Williams. “My father was a vegetarian, so I had a good grilled cheese sandwich when I got home. It reminded me of the family.”

Of course, the taste of a toasted cheese sandwich is akin to a time machine. “Grilled cheese is nostalgic”, Shane Schiably, main vice-president of the Culinary Strategy for First Watch, which has more than 570 restaurants in 30 states.

“It’s more than melted cheeses and crisp bread. It brings people back to their childhood and to simpler moments,” he told USA Today. “It is the last comforting food.”

The bases of the toasted cheese are simple: the sticky cheese between two pieces of toast. Either because of its simplicity or its malleability, the Americans consume them by the billions.

About 2.4 billion grilled cheese sandwiches were consumed at home in the 12 months ending in February 2025, according to national food trends and Circana consumer reports. 171 other million have been ordered in retail restaurants and catering stores, says Circana.

“The cheese is not only half the name of the sandwich, it is the heart of what makes the cheese grilled if loved,” said Jenny Mehlman, principal director of cheese, taste and flavors at Dairy Farmers of America, in Usa Today. “There is a warm and nostalgic feeling that comes both with the thought and the pleasure of this classic.”

Actor Harrison Ford likes to experiment with classic grilled cheese, the Food Sweet website told his son last year.

“He would make this grilled cheese sandwich for me on whole wheat with a very good pointed cheddar and tomato sauce and Worcestershire of all things,” said Ben Ford, now executive chief and owner of the Ford filling station in Culver City, California, and author of “Taming The Feast”, a kitchen book.

The story recently resurfaced on several news sites with the return in February of “Yellowstone” prequel “1923”, which Co-Stars Ford and Helen Mirren. Ford also appeared in “Captain America: Brave New World”, which features Anthony Mackie and becomes available to buy and rent on digital platforms on April 15.

On Parade.com, journalist Jessica Wrubel noted that the Ford sandwich recipe is a simplified vision of Welsh Rarebit, which can be done with a Worcestershire sauce to add a salty flavor. His verdict? “A grilled cheese more than decent than children and adults would like (a bit like Ford films).”

What is your choice for a toasted cheese?

Almost half of all fans of toasted cheese (47%) keep things simple with just melted cheese between the toast, according to a survey of 2,515 adults, including 2,330 grilled cheese sandwiches, led from March 17 to 19 for borden cheese by Yougov.

However, when you exceed the basics of toasted cheese sandwiches, permutations can become personal. Take the bread, for example. While Harrison Ford was going to look for wheat, many stick to a traditional white. Chef Carla Hall likes Pumpernickel.

With the Bread and Cheese Foundation, cooks can “be creative, adding fresh garnishes or unique flavors to really do them,” said Mehlman.

Here is what Americans cook, according to the Borden Cheese Survey:

  • Cheese: American (49%) and cheddar (46%) are cheese of choice for grilled cheese sandwiches. The other favorites include mozzarella (27%), Switzerland (22%), pepper taking (21%) and Colby Jack (20%), while most (57%) use two cheese slices, more than 20%prefer three or more.
  • Coating: 65% said they were repairing butter outside; 14% use mayonnaise.
  • Ringing preference: About 70% want the bread to grind a golden brown, while 12% prefer bread well done to burn. About 30% of parents said they had to redo a toasted cheese because the toast level was not quite correct. Do you want a guide to grill? Borden has made a book of free grilled cheese samples (to identify the color of your toast level) with recipes you can register on bordandesseee.com. You can also register for a chance to win free cheese for a year.
  • Additional ingredients: About 27% said they add sandwich meat like ham or turkey. The other ingredients added include tomato (27%), bacon (23%), onions (16%), avocado (10%) and others (4%). Some people, perhaps this author, even used the jalapeño jalapeño jam concocted by their mother and their brother.

How to raise your grilled cheese experience

American cheese remains the favorite for toasted cheese and the organic valley recently put on the market new blocks of American cheese, which facilitates the personalization of the amount of cheese.

“They are made for cheese enthusiasts who appreciate the nostalgic and comforting goodness of American cheese, but are looking for high -quality organic ingredients,” USA Today Diverson Thorson, Product Director of Products at Organic Valley, told USA.

  • Change the cheese: You can go beyond the American and the cheddar. Thorson suggests trying Mueenster, Swiss baby or Provolone. You can also add crumbled blue cheese or another grated cheese like mozzarella, which offers spectacular cheese traction. Organic Valley has also created grilled cheese recommendations according to your astrological sign.
  • Try a new type of bread: Grilled cheeses can be made with all kinds of bread, including brioche, sourdough and grilled bread from Texas. But try to think outside with an rye or a Ciabatta.
  • Prepare for: Leave the butter and cheese at room temperature before cooking. Your butter spreads more uniformly and cheese will be easier. A favorite: in the film “Chef”, Jon Favreau Butors The two pieces of bread, spurts olive oil in the pan then place each piece of bread, side butter down, on the oil and slides them. Then he puts chips of cheese on each half. It is only when there is a visible fusion that it brings together the two halves.
  • Zester: For an additional layer of flavor, try to use ghee, a clarified butter from South Asia, says Thorson. “This adds a rich note that brings your toasted cheese to the upper level.” Cheeses such as Monterey Jack with Jalapeño or Habanero Peppers will add a kick. Like Borden, most cheese brands have released cheese options; Organic Valley has just marked new blocks of American cheese with peppers and spices.
  • Cooking tips: Another simple tip is to cover your sandwich with aluminum foil or a pot in a pot while it cooks to trap heat and encourage a smoother cast iron, says Thorson.
