Our Favorite Frozen Cheese Pizza Is a Sicilian Masterpiece

A frozen cheese pizza may be convenient when you don’t feel like cooking, but its convenience means nothing if it tastes exactly like the box it came in. With the world of frozen pies having grown so vast that they have their own dedicated section in the grocery store, there has to be a cheese pizza that beats the long-standing accusation that frozen pizza tastes like cardboard, right? Mashed set out to find out which pizza was “the one,” sampling a total of 10 popular pies from the frozen section and ranking the frozen cheese pizzas from worst to best. We ultimately determined that Screamin’ Sicilian Pizza Co.’s Bessie’s Revenge is the best frozen cheese pizza on the market.

Our graders considered the three most important elements of cheese pizza when making their selection: the crust, the sauce, and, of course, the cheese. Screamin’ Sicilian earned points for having a buttery base that was the perfect blend of chewy and crunchy, and unlike some of the other entrants on the list (ahem, Totino’s), it didn’t taste like cardboard in the slightest. It also didn’t skimp on the dairy. Made with a blend of shredded Parmesan, Romano, and white cheddar topped with discs of fresh-cut Wisconsin mozzarella, this pizza was nothing short of cheesy. Still, the brand’s top-secret tomato sauce recipe didn’t get lost in the mounds of cheese—and neither did the garlic essence our graders picked out, which helped this pie stand out from the competition.

Za cheese isn’t the only thing Screamin’ Sicilian does well

Screaming Sicilian Pizza Bessie’s Revenge – Steven Luna/Mashed

With a delectable flavor profile, satisfying texture, and the perfect cheese-to-sauce ratio in every bite, Screamin’ Sicilian Pizza Co.’s take on a classic frozen cheese pizza certainly seems like a pizza to scream about. Yes, it’s on the pricier side of frozen pies, coming in at just under $7 for our pick at their local Walmart (though prices can vary by location); however, many shoppers, including our pick, have argued that the higher price tag attached to Bessie’s Revenge is worth it, considering how impressive the pie is.

Cheese isn’t the only area where this mustachioed brand shines in the frozen pizza world. While the beauty of a plain pizza is that you can make it at home with toppings, even with canned ingredients like mushrooms or tapenade, the Screamin’ Sicilian line offers a wide range of pizzas littered with high-quality ingredients and toppings.

In 2023, a Reddit user praised the brand’s pepperoni pizza, Holy Pepperoni, giving it an impressive 10/10. “The pepperoni got nice and crispy without being too greasy,” he wrote of the “za,” which he thought might be their “new holy grail.” That same year, another Reddit user shared that the line’s Supremus Maximus, topped with pepperoni, Italian sausage, bell peppers, onions, black olives, and mozzarella, was the best frozen pizza they’d ever had.
