Shanghai Zoo celebrates giant panda’s birthday with giant cake
The Shanghai Zoo in China was able to celebrate the eighth birthday of one of its giant pandas, and the party seemed to be a success! ABC News released a video of the birthday boy, Xing Guang, on Tuesday, June 25. He celebrated the day with a birthday cake just for him, filled with his favorite treats.
The video shows the custom birthday cake being made. It was five layers high and featured all of Xing Guang’s favorite things. It included watermelon, apples, squash, and other delicious treats, including what looked like some sort of “cookie.” I wonder if the birthday boy was willing to share it with someone else.
It seems he enjoyed his cake, especially the apple! ABC News commenters all agreed that the birthday boy was really cute. They also wished him a happy birthday. It was a beautiful day at the Shanghai Zoo!

Giant pandas return to the United States
According to Smithsonian Magazine, for the first time in more than 20 years, China has agreed to send us pandas. The San Diego Zoo expects its pandas to arrive this year and zookeepers and researchers are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to study the pandas. Interestingly, a 2022 report from the US Congressional Research Service explained: “Zoos typically pay a fee of $1 million per year for two pandas, with the money going toward China’s conservation efforts. » It’s not cheap to have the honor of housing pandas.
The news that pandas are returning to the United States is big news. Pandas are a symbol of friendship in China, and tensions between the two countries in recent years have led China to not renew its panda loans to many zoos. The San Diego Zoo unfortunately said goodbye to its pandas in 2019, the Memphis Zoo had to send its panda home in April 2023, and DC said goodbye to its pandas in November 2023. The only pandas that remained on American soil are the four who live there. at Zoo Atlanta. A Belgian zoo and a South Korean zoo are also home to giant pandas, and others are spread across the world.
The Washington DC Zoo will also welcome two pandas later this year. The 2-year-old pandas, male Bao Li and female Qi ng Bao, will remain there under a 10-year breeding and research agreement. How will these pandas be delivered to their new homes? Via FedEx! NBC shared on its website: “FedEx is preparing to transport the new pair to the United States via its ‘Panda Express service.’ The animals will be quarantined for at least 30 days, then allowed to settle in for a few weeks before the panda exhibit opens to the public. Another East Bay Times article said: “Chinese experts traveled with the bears and spent months in San Diego. »
I live in Georgia near Atlanta and I didn’t know there were pandas at the zoo here! I can’t wait to spend a day visiting the zoo and seeing the pandas; I’ve always wanted to see one in person!
