Stores are designed to make you spend more than you need to.

But bargain hunter Polly has key tips to ensure you get what you need at a great price.

She said: “Make sure you have the funds – decide what your budget is and save in advance for big sales.

“Keep in mind that bargain hunting takes time and you may have to wait until certain items go on sale.

“Consider not wearing a garment if you think the price might go down, return it and buy it at a better price.

“Don’t buy impulsively, decide what you want before you get to a store, make a list.

“Be prepared for sales: Some sales only last one day. People don’t expect to see deals, so you have to actively look for them.”

Here’s what stores don’t want you to know:

  • The winter sales start in early December, but prices will drop significantly later in the month.
  • Stores will always prefer to sell at a loss rather than keep inventory and use that to your advantage.
  • Clothes are usually on sale after a week.
