“So many wonderful memories.” Dante’s Restaurants closes State College pizzeria and bar

A State College catering company with deep downtown roots has closed a basement pizzeria and bar, with the owners directing customers to a nearby location and hinting at something new.

HiWay Pizza Pub and The Saloon, at the corner of East College Avenue and Hiester Street, has closed its doors “following an abrupt and unforeseen change of plans,” according to a press release issued Monday by Dante’s Restaurant’s & Nightlife. A sign on the door of HiWay Pizza Pub says the restaurant “has moved a few blocks,” to 1301 W. College Ave., State College, where another HiWay Pizza has been located since 2017.

“Along with my father Andy and my mother Cathy, I would like to express how truly grateful we are for the support and sponsorship we have received from the downtown community, returning students and alumni over the years “, Jennifer Zangrilli, director of Dante’s Restaurants & Nightlife, said in a written statement. “While we are sad to say goodbye to our downtown locations, we are excited about the future and the growth opportunities that lie ahead.” »

In the press release, the company urged people to “stay tuned for updates on our exciting transition, upcoming renovations and our soon-to-be-announced 60th anniversary celebration.”

“There are many chapters in our history of the last 60 years and we are already working hard to write the next pages that will take us forward for many years to come. We look forward to continuing to serve this community that we have been fortunate to raise our family in and live in,” Zangrilli said.

The downtown HiWay Pizza location opened in 1976, but between 2008 and 2019 it was Inferno Brick Oven Pizza. HiWay Pizza Pub’s menu includes pizza, calzones, pastas, sandwiches, salads and other dishes. The restaurant prides itself on its unique homemade pizza doughs and Italian sauces.

HiWay Pizza’s full menu delivery service will continue from West College Avenue, according to the press release. Employees from downtown locations were offered employment opportunities there.

And for those wondering, Dante Restaurants Director JP Mills said the Saloon’s “Monkey Boy” cocktail will also be moving to HiWay West.

“We have enjoyed a very, very long experience downtown and are fortunate to have so many wonderful memories and loyal customers over the years. We would like to thank all of our former employees, customers and friends for their hard work, patronage and support,” Mills said in a written statement. “We invite everyone to continue spending quality time with us just 15 blocks from HiWay West. We’re excited about the future and can’t wait to show you what we have planned next.

Former Dante’s locations downtown include Deli Restaurant and Z Bar, Crowbar and Liberty Craft House.
