Tesco Chocolate Bars ‘Do Not Consume’ Warning and Recall
Supermarket multipacks of Caramel & Hazelnut Nougat Chocolate Bars and Dreamy Caramel Chocolate Bar multipacks may contain undeclared peanuts.
British food and consumer goods group Tesco has issued an urgent “do not consume” warning and recalled two types of its own-brand chocolate bars. Customers who bought certain multipacks of Tesco Nutty Nougat Caramel and Tesco Dreamy Caramel chocolate bars are being urged by the company and health authorities to return them due to a potentially life-threatening health risk, according to advice shared by the UK’s Food Standards Agency (FSA).
The recall was issued June 7 “due to packaging errors” that led to “a risk that peanuts were not declared as an ingredient in the product,” the company said. That means the candy bars pose a potential health risk to anyone with a peanut allergy, one of the most common causes of severe allergy attacks, according to the Mayo Clinic. Signs and symptoms of a peanut allergy, which typically occur within minutes of exposure, include skin reactions, itching or tingling in or around the mouth and throat, digestive issues, throat tightness, shortness of breath or wheezing, and a runny nose. Peanut allergy is the most common cause of food-related anaphylaxis, a potentially life-threatening reaction that narrows the airways and can block breathing.
Due to the health risks associated with undeclared peanuts, Tesco has issued a recall for two different packs sold by the supermarket chain. Tesco Nutty Nougat Caramel Chocolate Bars multipacks with a best before date of 28 February 2025 and Tesco Dreamy Caramel Chocolate Bars with a best before date of 31 January 2025 and 28 February 2025 are affected by the recall. Both products were available in a pack of “6 x 40g”, according to the notice.
The FSA and Tesco have advised consumers who have purchased the recalled chocolate bars not to eat them. The products can be returned to any Tesco store for a full refund. Tesco said no receipt was required to return the products. The FSA added that the company “has been asked to contact relevant allergy support organisations, who will inform their members of the recall” and has also “issued a recall notice to its customers”, explaining why the product is being recalled and advising consumers what to do if they have purchased the recalled product.
