Millions of people in South Africa will roll their eyes when The Body Shop announces it has become the world’s leading beauty brand.1 to achieve 100% vegan product formulations across all ranges including skincare, bodycare, haircare, makeup and fragrance. The entire portfolio of product formulations has been certified by The Vegan Society2.

The beauty brand achieved the ambitious goal it set for itself in 2021, when 60% of its products already bore The Vegan Society brand. The beauty brand continues to pave the way for others.

Refilwe Mashego, Brand Manager at The Body Shop South Africa says: “We did it! Every product formulation from The Body Shop is now certified by the Vegan Society. We have worked tirelessly to achieve this milestone, an ambition that has been our guiding light, our North Star, since The Body Shop was founded in 1976.

“We were the first beauty company to fight against animal testing in cosmetics. We were the first major global beauty brand to use cruelty-free musk in our fragrances.3 and we have now achieved another world first.

Become vegan

The Vegan Society is a trusted brand as it represents the global benchmark for vegan certification across multiple sectors. The certification process is extremely thorough, with meticulous evaluation of each raw material supplier and manufacturer in the product catalog.

For The Body Shop, this meant that more than 4,000 ingredients had to be validated for more than 1,000 products to carry the label. All certified products will feature The Vegan Society logo, proving the vegan certification of the product formula. In addition to this, a wide selection of products will display the word “vegan” on the front of the package. This means customers can happily slather themselves in their favorite The Body Shop ranges without worrying about labels to check if they align with their values.

The Vegan Society’s Business Development Director, Chantelle Adkins, comments: “We warmly congratulate The Body Shop on achieving 100% of its product formulations being vegan and certified with The Vegan Society’s vegan mark. This is a massive project for them and shows their commitment and dedication to vegan beauty.

Business as a force for good

Additionally, veganism is one of the fastest growing lifestyle movements in the world and “vegan beauty” is booming. 95%4 of vegans and vegetarians look for vegan/vegetarian certification logos when shopping for a brand for the first time.
