Half of Brits admit they secretly throw away food from their partners, as households waste up to £500 a year.
The average UK household wastes up to £480 a year on fresh produce that sells out faster than expected. Salad, bread and fruit are the most common culprits in our shopping carts and often end up in the trash. Research has shown that three in five people (72 per cent) feel guilty when food is past its due date, with almost half (44 per cent) of those surveyed admitting they even hide use-by dates and expired food at their partner. Conscious of waste, one in three Brits (34%) admit they will regularly turn down dates with friends because they fear their food will spoil at home. This has sparked major FOGO (Fear Of Going Off), as more than half (59%) of Brits admit to worrying about food loss every week, according to new research from Ocado, which spoke to 2,000 adults. The online supermarket offers a Fresh+ promise that ensures customers’ food is as fresh as possible, offering a refund if customers are not satisfied. To reassure Brits about the shelf life of their food and help combat FOGO, Ocado has teamed up with Instagram chef Alfie Steiner, @alfiecooks, who said: “There’s nothing like fresh produce. And it’s not just about good taste, it’s about knowing you can rest easy and plan how to cook with it because your food won’t wilt quickly. “FOGO is real and, according to Ocado research, many of us are experiencing it. I want to help people overcome fear, so they can experience all the joy of ultra-fresh produce, without having to worry about cooking against the clock. “Frustration with expiry dates is helping to fuel FOGO, with more than half of Brits (64%) saying they are often disappointed with the shelf life of their fresh produce. Additionally, more than a third of Brits (36%) % say they have to return to stores because their products are selling out faster than expected. The most common culprits are salad leaves (43%), bread (34%) and berries (33%). ) Laura Harricks of Ocado added: “We know how frustrating it can be when food is eaten before you expect it to be thrown out the window and, as this study reveals, plans; social and money too We want to help the nation fight FOGO and, with the Ocado Fresh+ promise, give people peace of mind, so they can spend a little less time worrying! about the food in their fridge and spending more time enjoying it. Ocado’s Fresh+ promise ensures customers’ food is delivered straight to the door, without the hassle of a supermarket. This means food arrives as fresh as expected, and then some. And that goes for fruits and vegetables, as much as it does for bread and milk, which helps when planning next week’s lunches. And because a promise is a promise, if customers are still not 100% satisfied, they can arrange a hassle-free refund via the Ocado app.
