The Great Debate: What is the best chocolate treat of all time?
Heather Large: The Ultimate Ferrero Rocher Pleasure
World Chocolate Day takes place on July 7 every year.
Dedicated to all things chocolate, it is meant to mark the day our favourite treat was first introduced to Europe in 1550.
But not all chocolate tastes the same, and not all bars are considered equal.
When it comes to satisfying a craving, my favorites have changed as I’ve gotten older.
When I was younger I loved Mars or Boost bars, but now I find a whole serving to be way too sweet.
The mini Mars that come in a jar of Celebrations are more than enough nougat and caramel for me.
I also loved Yorkie – and still do – although I wasn’t a fan of their “It’s not for girls” ad campaign.
In a way, it was marketing genius, because their sales probably exploded as more and more girls and women wanted to buy them as a sign of defiance.
These days, the combination of fruit or nuts and chocolate is always a winner for me.
I love Terry’s Chocolate and Orange. Christmas isn’t Christmas without one.
Lindt also makes a Lindor Orange bar which is irresistible.
But for me, Ferrero Rocher is always a real treat. The combination of creamy chocolate and hazelnut is simply delicious.
Vicki Jones: Curly Wurly all the way
Ah, chocolate! Chocolate should be celebrated every day, not just on July 7th! From Easter eggs to Christmas boxes to the Sunday treats we received after church each week as kids, chocolate is always a welcome treat.
My favorite is the Curly Wurly. I think I convinced myself they’re not as ugly because they have holes in them!
And I love Crunchy bars, the perfect blend of milk chocolate and honeycomb, and not as rich as a solid chocolate bar.
A recent study commissioned by Betway revealed that we are definitely a nation of chocolate lovers. The study looked at the number of positive online posts referencing specific brands. Kit Kat came out on top with over 500,000 mentions in one month! It was closely followed by Mars, Aero and Double Decker.
And Heather is right, advertisers have a lot to be ashamed of when it comes to chocolate. I’m sure most people are familiar with at least one opening line or tagline from an ad.
The ones that stick in my mind are the Cadbury caramel bunny who “took things very lightly” and the drumming gorilla who promoted the brand’s Dairy Milk bar.
While chocolate is obviously a treat that should be enjoyed in moderation, I would say that a little of what you love goes a long way, and after a stressful day, nothing beats a good chocolate bar.
