Things to do in Philadelphia this weekend – Phillies vs. Marlins, Chris Brown, Chinese Lantern Festival and more
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — It’s another summer weekend in the city of Philadelphia and the streets are about to be filled with music lovers, festival-goers and sports fans.
The Phillies will take on the Marlins this weekend at Citizens Bank Park, but that won’t be the only action in South Philly. Chris Brown will be in town this weekend with the 11:11 Tour in the City of Brotherly Love. The energy continues to spread across the city to Franklin Square for the Chinese Lantern Festival, the Philly Indie Book Fair in West Philly, the Philly Mimosa Fest in Old City, and a sweet, nostalgic festival in Wilmington, Delaware that you won’t want to miss.

Phillies vs Marlins
The Phillies will face the Marlins from Thursday to Sunday. First pitch for Friday’s game is at 6:20 p.m., and Saturday’s game starts at 4:05 p.m. The Phillies’ series-closing game on Sunday starts a little earlier at 1:35 p.m. Tickets for Friday’s game start at $43.
Goose at Mann
Get ready to let loose this Friday because Goose takes over the Mann Center in West Philadelphia. This jam band is having a moment and you can experience it all this Friday night. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. Get ready to groove, Goose style. Tickets start at $43.
Chris Brown at the Wells Fargo Center
C. Breezy performed Thursday in South Philly and will be back Saturday at the Wells Fargo Center. Get ready to rock out because the 11:11 Tour will have you dancing and will also feature Maeta as the opening act.
The Saturday show starts at 7:30 p.m. and tickets will cost you more to see this star-studded show. Tickets to see Brown’s 11:11 tour on Saturday start at $198.
Chinese Lantern Festival
THE Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival is back to celebrate the Year of the Dragon at Franklin Square for one of the largest Chinese New Year celebrations.
The Chinese Lantern Festival is one of the biggest Chinese New Year celebrations. This tradition began around 2,000 years ago in China and involves lighting decorated lanterns on the 15th day of the first lunar month of the Chinese calendar. Today, millions of people celebrate the holiday around the world, including hundreds of thousands in the Philadelphia area.
In addition to the lanterns on display, the festival will also feature fountain shows, food, live entertainment and more. Performances include face-changing, hula-hooping and chair-standing.
Drinks will also be available at the Lotus Cocktail Garden operated by Cescaphe. Food vendors will offer many traditional Chinese options, including Dandan noodles and other dishes like huge, fresh, soft pretzels and more.
The park closes at 5 p.m. each night, then will reopen for the ticketed portion of the festival, which will run from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. each night through August 18. Tickets are available on the Philly Chinese Lantern Festival website.
Philadelphia Independent Book Fair
Book lovers unite! The Philly Indie Book Festival, presented by Literacy Moments Magazine and Just For Us Girls Foundation, is a reader’s paradise. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, guests can network with authors, attend book signings, business and writing workshops, and a maker’s market. Pick up a new read and connect with other Philadelphia book lovers at this free event this weekend. The Philly Indie Book Festival will be held at 1301 Belmont Avenue in West Philadelphia.
Philly Mimosa Fest at JJ Bootleggers
Celebrate the start of summer with a sweet treat at Philadelphia Mimosa Fest. Festivities begin Saturday afternoon at noon for VIP ticket holders and 1pm for general admission ticket holders at JJ Bootleggers. You’ll want to head to JJ’s before 3pm to enjoy delicious brunch snacks, great tunes, photo ops and of course, lots of mimosas! Once 3pm rolls around, the party will start rocking and grooving at nearby venues like Old City Beer Garden, Las Bugambilias, Lilly’s Ferry, National Mechanics Bar and Restaurant and more!

It’s like painting with a touch of originality but better! The second annual Black AF Juneteenth Cookout + Paint & Sip is a painting event with a twist at FDR Park with fun games like Spades, Uno, Giant Jenga and more.
This painting and tasting exhibition invites the community to personalize their painting. According to the event website, painters will have the opportunity to choose from “a selection of diversely themed Black AF canvas portraits,” celebrating individuality and culture.
Ticket prices vary but include access to games, photo facilities and vendors. Painting and tasting tickets also include a free glass of wine as well as painting supplies and a canvas. General admission ticket holders cannot access painting and tasting ticket holder benefits.
The Black AF Juneteenth Cookout + Paint & Sip begins at 10 a.m. and continues until 5 p.m.
Old Fashioned Ice Cream Festival in Wilmington, Delaware
I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! Nothing will make you more nostalgic than a cold, sweet ice cream cone to cool you down on a hot summer day this weekend at the Old Fashioned Ice Festival in Wilmington, Delaware. This year’s festival will feature local favorites, food trucks, carnival games for families and kids, live music from local talent, fireworks and much more!
Celebrate your weekend in Delaware this Saturday with something sweet at the Old Fashioned Ice Cream Festival. Festivities will take place from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Rockwood Park & Museum. The venue will offer museum tours and an additional parking shuttle at Rockwood Office Park! Tickets are only $5 and children under 12 get in free!
