This Cheese Could Help You Lose Weight and Build Muscle, Nutritionist Says

In the UK, we love our cheese. According to Grocery Trader, it can be found in almost every UK fridge – 94% of them to be precise.

Although it may be tasty, many health organizations advise consuming cheese in moderation due to its high saturated fat and calorie content.

However, one expert has recommended eating more of a specific type of cheese to aid weight loss and workout efforts.

According to Edward Mather, chief nutritionist at Fuel Hub, cottage cheese has many health and nutritional benefits.

“White cheese is in the spotlight, and it was about time,” he said.

“It’s a convenient, ready-to-eat option that’s perfect for busy lifestyles and quick meals. Beyond its convenience, cottage cheese’s mild flavor and creamy texture make it a versatile ingredient that’s easy to add to a balanced meal or as a grab-and-go snack.”

“High in protein, low in calories, and packed with essential micronutrients, it’s also a nutrient-dense choice that supports overall health and well-being. It’s definitely worth the hype.”

A 100 gram serving of low-fat cottage cheese contains 84 calories.

This is significantly less than a standard cheddar, which contains around 400 calories per 100g.

Cottage cheese is still high in protein, with 11g per 100g, as well as calcium, potassium and selenium, all of which are necessary for the body.

Edward shared four ways cottage cheese can aid in weight loss and help achieve other fitness goals.

It promotes lean muscle growth and can aid in weight loss

He said: “The high protein content of cottage cheese, combined with its low calorie content, helps athletes achieve their optimal protein intake without exceeding their caloric intake. This promotes lean muscle growth and aids in weight management.”

It can help your muscles recover after a workout

“The protein in cottage cheese is great for muscle growth, repair and overall recovery — crucial for optimal athletic performance,” he continued.

It improves muscle function and bone health

Edward said: “The calcium content in cottage cheese helps athletes to have strong bones and efficient muscle function, thus improving their athletic abilities.”

It helps maintain constant energy levels

He added: “Being high in protein, it helps keep you fuller for longer. This can help athletes avoid overeating and maintain consistent energy levels throughout the day.”

His advice is backed by the Cleveland Clinic in the US, which says: “Three factors make cottage cheese an excellent choice if you are looking to lose weight or maintain your weight.”

These factors include the fact that it is high in protein, low in fat and provides calcium.
