Tiffany Haddish Blames ‘Media’ for Her Reaction to Grocery Store in African Country
Tiffany Haddish has been heavily criticized for making a controversial video of her visit to a grocery store in Zimbabwe.
The comedian and actress was called “ignorant” for appearing surprised by the quality of the store and pointing out the presence of items like “organic strawberries” and frozen foods.
After being criticized for her behavior, Tiffany Haddish defended herself by saying that she was only calling out the misrepresentation of African stores by the American media.
Tiffany Haddish Filmed Herself in a Zimbabwean Supermarket
Haddish has responded to criticism over the TikTok video she posted about her recent trip to Zimbabwe.
During his visit, the comedian visited a local supermarket and shared his reaction to the different items available for sale inside.
As she browsed the stores, Haddish seemed surprised at how well-stocked the supermarket was and made numerous comments about the size of the building.
In the TikTok video, she tried to use an “African” accent when saying the word “Zimbabwe.” Haddish said, “Hey everyone. So I’m here in Zimbabwe? They have a grocery store! It’s beautiful.”
Haddish then highlighted several items she was shocked to find in the store, such as “organic strawberries,” “sugar cane,” and “dates.”
The actress also checked out the meat section and said it didn’t smell bad. She was impressed by the presence of a frozen food section and a “whole wall of alcohol.”

After the TikTok video went viral, many users criticized Haddish for implying that the store was modern for an African country.
Many have criticized the “Night School” actress for her “ignorant” reaction to the grocery store, which is a staple food for many African countries.
Some fans even violently insulted Haddish, calling her names like a “fucking idiot” and saying she was making fun of the Zimbabwean people.
Others wondered what was wrong with the comedian that she had to record a reaction at the supermarket and share it online.
Some users also accused Haddish of perpetuating stupid and harmful stereotypes about Africans and how those countries operate.
One comment read: “How ignorant!!!” while another person wrote: “You really can’t be that ignorant!!!”
The comedian defended herself on social media: “The media are lying”
After the TikTok video went viral and received widespread criticism, Haddish finally took to X, formerly Twitter, to offer an explanation and defend herself from the hate.
According to the “Girls Trip” actress, she was only trying to demystify the foreign media’s portrayal of Africa and the way people buy food.
“We got here and I had tears in my eyes when I found out the truth. The media lies,” Haddish said, according to TMZ“I thought I should share this because I know people in the United States who believe that Africans have nothing.”
Haddish also made it clear that she really enjoyed her time in Zimbabwe and felt much safer there than she did at home in Los Angeles.
The actress complimented the natural food and encouraged more people to experience Africa for themselves.
She also had interactions with her followers online
Most of Haddish’s comments in response to criticism were interactions with followers who had called her out on her TikTok post.
One person asked the actress, “Did you think we ate grass?” and she responded with a message about the American media’s portrayal of Africa.
His response was, “No. But the media made me believe that all your food is bought in open-air markets, with goats and cows lying around waiting to be slaughtered. With all kinds of smells and flies everywhere.”
In another response, Haddish explained again that she had a different intention for the TikTok video.
She wrote: “If they had shown you the whole video you would have seen me saying that I am debunking some of the bullshit we have been told and shown in America.”
Despite Haddish’s multiple responses and explanations on TikTok, some fans have only grown more frustrated with the comedian.
One person commented: “You have access to every channel and every book to be so ignorant.” Another fan wrote: “You could have done your own research and not depend on the media. I mean, Google is free!”
Tiffany Haddish Opens Up About Her Struggles
Last year, Haddish got very candid in a interview with the Washington Postopening up about her attempts to give birth to a child.
The actress recalled her conversation with a nurse about her eighth miscarriage. She said, “I’m going to be honest with you, this would be my eighth (miscarriage).”
“I have a heart-shaped uterus. It can’t hold anything,” the actress added.
Haddish has said she kept all of her miscarriages private because she didn’t want people to worry about her unnecessarily. She said, “Like a wounded animal, I’d rather just go into a cave by myself and lick my wounds.”
Haddish also revealed to the publication She said she took parenting classes to prepare for adoption. However, the actress admitted she was still undecided about motherhood.
