Tillamook Just Won America’s Best Cheese Award: This One Is a Must Try

Tillamook makes good cheese. Its line of whole-milk mozzarella is a testament to that, and its brick cream cheese may even be better than Philadelphia’s.

But it is above all for its cheddar that this brand is best known. It is not for nothing that it has won numerous awards for this variety, including one of its most recent titles earlier this year: Best in Class for its strong cheddar at the 2024 edition of the World Champion Cheese Contest.

But that’s not all. Most recently, Tillamook won the prestigious title of “Best American Cheese, All Varieties” at the International Cheese and Dairy Awards (ICDA) for its Farmers’ Collection Hickory Smoked Extra Sharp White Cheddar. With more than 5,500 nominations, Tillamook’s 13 awards, including for its cheddar, brick cream cheese and cream cheese spreads, underscore its commitment to quality and excellence.

The company calls Farmers’ Collection Hickory Smoked Extra Sharp White Cheddar “a full-bodied cheddar balanced by savory smoky notes.” It also won the award for best “naturally smoked cheese” of the year.

It’s a firm cheese with a creamy texture that’s been “cold smoked” in hickory wood smoke, bringing out a perfect blend of nutty and buttery flavors. No wonder it also won the 2020 World Cheese Competition.

While Hickory Smoked Extra Sharp White Cheddar came out on top, several other Tillamook cheeses followed closely behind. Seriously Strawberry Cream Cheese won in the “Soft Cheese Containing Sweet Additives” and “Soft or Specialty Cream Cheese with Additives” categories. Meanwhile, Tillamook Brick Cream Cheese took home the title of best “Spreadable Cheese, All Varieties.”
