Try a dim sum brunch or have breakfast where President Biden dines on the beach in Delaware
Looking for a great place for brunch on Delaware Beach?
We have 5 suggestions, including spots frequented by President Biden and a former University of Delaware/Notre Dame basketball coach. Dive in.
2300 Coastal Road, Dewey Beach; sunrisedeweybeach.business.site
Dewey Beach residents have long started their day at Sunrise, a humble restaurant that has been feeding locals and tourists for 40 years.
This low-rise, waterfront building hugs Route 1. Customers slide into plastic seats at one of four tables and enjoy the most important meal of the day, at any time of day. Service is fast, portions are generous, and, as a testament to its popularity, lines are usually long.
Things have changed recently at the restaurant. The new owner is Robbie Holson, who has worked at Sunrise since he was 14, according to an April 4 article in the Cape Gazette.
Sunrise is also open year-round and offers late-night hours on Friday and Saturday nights from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m.
The gyro omelet is stuffed with sliced lamb, chunks of feta cheese, green peppers, tomatoes, and onions. The omelet is so big it practically falls off the plate. But the crowning glory of the recipe is the bowl of tzatziki sauce mixed with freshly grated cucumbers, oregano, garlic powder, and homemade yogurt.
Another customer favorite is the chicken and cheese omelet.
Sunrise is also known for its fried potatoes. The potatoes are peeled and boiled the day before and kept overnight in a refrigerator. In the morning, the potatoes are cut into pieces and fried with garlic, butter, paprika, oregano, salt and white pepper.
510 Rehoboth Avenue, Rehoboth Beach; eggrehoboth.com
Owner Melissa Postles opened the brunch restaurant in 2016 and counts President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden among her customers. The couple owns a beach house not far from Egg.
Egg took over the former McQuay’s Market near the Rehoboth drawbridge and traffic circle, quickly becoming a favorite with locals and tourists alike. It offers indoor dining and outdoor seating in the garden cafe.
The sunny, bright cafe offers intriguing dishes including Sriracha Bacon Candy; the “Uncle Charlie,” sautéed chicken livers, bacon and shallots on fluffy scrambled eggs served with home fries and toast; the Eastern Shore Benedict made with jumbo lump crab, poached eggs and hollandaise sauce served on an English muffin with home fries; or the Eggs Norway, scrambled eggs with smoked salmon, goat cheese on toasted rye bread with fresh fruit.
New menu items include sausage, apple and cheddar balls served with bourbon maple syrup and stone-ground horseradish mustard.
Egg is open daily from 7am to 1pm and the bar opens at 8am. The restaurant does not take reservations.
102 Second Street, Lewes; bramble-brine.com/
Start your morning with a Pony Express-o, a nitro espresso martini, at this restaurant located in one of Lewes’ most famous historic homes.
Owner Megan Kee, who runs the Houston-White Co., La Fable and Dalmata Italiano restaurants in Rehoboth, took over the former Trader Mansion at the corner of Second Street and Savannah Road in downtown Lewes in 2021. It was most recently called 2nd Street Tavern, but for 20 years before that it was known as The Buttery. Kee previously ran a Rehoboth restaurant called Bramble & Brine.
She took over both names for the Lewes restaurant, which serves brunch from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Try the Bramble French Omelet made with Gruyere, chives, mushrooms, greens and potatoes, or the “Flying Saucer Sammny,” a fried egg on brioche with spicy candied bacon and cheddar. The menu changes often.
Coastal Highway 2009 (Delaware Route 1), Dewey Beach; 302-227-4600; thestarboard.com/home
The Starboard is easily one of the best bars on Delaware’s beaches, but it also offers a popular Sunday brunch and breakfast served daily from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. (it opens at 8 a.m. during the summer season).

You can’t go wrong with any of their omelets, especially the one made with shrimp and lump crabmeat, or the Breakfast Brey’ritto. The breakfast sandwich is named for former University of Delaware and later Notre Dame basketball coach Mike Brey, a Starboard customer who enjoyed an OrangeCrush (or two). The Brey’ritto burrito is made with scrambled eggs and wrapped in bacon, sausage or scrapple, and includes cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses, as well as fresh pico de gallo. It’s served with homemade hash browns or tater tots.
Don’t leave without trying Starboard’s famous “Make Your Own” Bloody Mary Smorgasbord.
