Tyla responds after answering Charlamagne’s ‘colorful’ question

Tyla had to take some time out of her busy day to set the record straight once about her race.

South African singer “Water” is riding a wave of success with her hit, self-titled debut album and continues to do press tours.

During a recent stop at The breakfast clubwhich becomes the one-stop shop when controversy arises, the singer responded to a question from host Charlamagne Tha God regarding past fallout from comments about her race.

How did it all start?

The drama comes from the fact that Tyla identifies as “colored”, which is completely normal for mixed non-white citizens of South Africa, but in the United States it is considered an insult by Black Americans.

Many people have seen her as using the term as a way to “disassociate” herself from her blackness while embracing a term that is widely considered an insult to the United States.

A debate sparked his use of the term, leading Charlamagne to ask him for his views on the matter. She addressed her team, who told her not to respond in a now-viral clip.

Hours after the clip’s fallout, Tyla took to her X account, formerly Twitter, to address the situation. She said she identifies as a black woman and further clarified her use of the term “colored.”

“I’ve never denied my blackness, I don’t know where it comes from,” she began. “I’m mixed with black/Zulu, Irish, Mauritian/Indian and mixed race. in Southa I would be classified as a woman of color and in other places I would be classified as a black woman. The breed is classified differently in different regions of the world.

The “Jump” artist continued, “I don’t expect to be identified as Colored outside of Southa by someone who isn’t comfortable doing so because I understand the weight of that word outside of SA, but to close this conversation, I am both colored in South Africa and a black woman. Reactions to Tyla’s use of “colorful” are still being felt

Tyla’s initial lack of response to Charlamagne’s question and follow-up statement did not quell the diaspora war on social media.

Many are defending the 22-year-old musician, while others are taking the opportunity to joke about her.

“She basically says to call him colored AND a black woman depending on context, environment and comfort… that’s what some people have been saying all along… and some of you still choose to argue and make it a diaspora war,” wrote one X user.

Another user joked using Wayan’s brother iconic opening theme song.
