What Fast Food Looks Like in 2024 on Staten Island, by the Numbers

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — When a restaurant announces it’s opening, everyone gets excited. Judging by the flood of emails, clicks on restaurant ads and lines of fans waiting in line, this fast-casual is highly anticipated and a sign of the lines of customers to come.

But it’s the buzz surrounding a new Dunkin’ Donuts — moving into the site of a former Dunkin’ in Dongan Hills — that has sparked curiosity about how many Dunkin’ locations already populate the borough. (The number is 39.)

How do other fast food chains compare to that figure? Here’s what we learned from the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s records and our own reports on the current state of the food industry.

(Spoiler alert: Starbucks and Subway are two brands also represented in double digits.)

The district is currently home to 1,061 licensed restaurants.

Not included in the following list are establishments such as pretzel shops, bubble tea shops, ice cream shops, pizza shops, bagel shops, and hyper-specific snack or candy stores like Donut World, Cinnabon, and Crumbl Cookie. Gourmet sandwich establishments like Anthony’s Paninoteca and Ronnie’s Sandwich Shoppe would not be considered “fast food,” in my opinion.

The starry one

The options indicate an independent operation as opposed to what is defined as a franchise location or chain.
