Who will replace Marty Sheargold on Triple M? Favourites to take over breakfast role revealed as radio host quits after AFL controversy

The frontrunners to replace Marty Sheargold on his Triple M Melbourne morning show have been revealed.

The 53-year-old host confirmed earlier this week that he would not be returning to the morning radio show, but would continue his podcast and his national 3pm slot with the network.

He said he wanted to spend more time with his family and prioritise “self-care” after a mysterious three-month absence last year following an alleged incident at the AFL grand final.

Now the favourites to succeed Sheargold have been revealed, with predictions that Mick Molloy’s Triple M show could air in his place.

“I think there’s a chance that Mick Molloy will be broadcast in both Melbourne and Sydney,” Craig Bruce, a former radio executive who hosts the podcast Game Changers Radio: Melbourne Radio Wars, told news.com.au.

Comedian Molloy currently hosts Triple M’s Sydney morning show with NRL’s Mark Geyer, and it wouldn’t be the first show to mark a radio expansion in Melbourne.

KIIS FM’s Kyle And Jackie O Show expanded to Melbourne audiences earlier this year in a $200 million deal that secures its position for the next 10 years.

Radio expert Bruce also speculated that Dave Hughes – who hosts Sydney’s 2Day FM morning show – could return to Melbourne airwaves to take up the role.

He previously co-hosted the show Hughesy & Kate, before Kate Langbroek left the show in 2019 to spend more time with her family, with Hughes moving on to host Hughesy, Ed and Erin.

The void in the market comes after Triple M confirmed on Thursday that radio presenter Sheargold would not be returning to its morning radio show.

“Taking an extended break at the end of last year reinforced the importance of spending more quality time with my family,” Sheargold said in a statement.

“I have therefore decided to prioritise my self-care, maintain a better work-life balance and not return to my Triple M Breakfast show. However, I will continue to host The Marty Sheargold Show podcast, as well as the national Triple M show from 3pm to 4pm.”

He continued: “I would like to thank my immediate team and the network for their continued support and understanding. And I would also like to thank the listeners for their loyalty to the show and the station. Like them, I remain a fan of Triple M.”

Dave Cameron, SCA’s Chief Content Officer, said: “SCA supports Marty’s decision to rebalance his personal and professional commitments, and we would like to thank Marty and his team for creating a unique and hilarious breakfast show for Melbourne since 2021.

“However, it is exciting that our listeners will continue to hear Marty alongside his current team of Troy Ellis, Loren Barry and Will Ralston, both on the Triple M network as part of a national afternoon radio show and on his fan-favourite daily podcast on LiSTNR, which regularly ranks highly in the Australian Podcast Charts.”

The move comes after his mysterious three-month absence last year following an alleged incident during the AFL grand final.

He was reportedly ejected by MCG security over offensive comments he made to other guests.

Contacted for comment, a Southern Cross Austereo spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia at the time: “Marty Sheargold left the AFL Grand Final at half-time of his own accord.”

Sheargold was on air the week after the Grand Final, but disappeared a few days later, prompting Anthony “Lehmo” Lehmann to replace him.

The struggling Melbourne radio host said he had taken an “extended break” because he had “burned out”.

“I realized I had completely burned myself out over the last two years,” he explained.

He then said he was inspired by AFL coaches Alistair Clarkson and Damien Hardwick, who both left their respective football teams last year.

“Last year, two guys raised their hands and said, ‘I need a break.’ And I thought, ‘You know, I need a break,’” Sheargold said.

“Things change. I’m not doing a routine this year,” he added, to which his producer Loren Barry responded, “You just do what you want.”

Marty then made a weird remark saying, “I’m going to party too. It’ll be fun, so stick around for it. Watch the wheels fall off.”

After his return to the show, some listeners called his return to the airwaves “unfunny” and “mean” as it divided his fans.

In a Reddit thread from April, several people weighed in on Sheargold’s on-air antics and offered their opinions.

After his absence, some listeners called his return to the airwaves “unfunny” and “mean” because his hosting style divided fans.

“I feel like it’s gotten bigger lately, but based on other people’s comments I don’t think that’s the case,” someone else said.

“All jokes are crap jokes. After listening to them for a while, you get tired of them,” commented another.

“I feel like he used to be funny, but now he just seems to insult people without any notable joke,” another said.

“I have no idea how he got his own show, he’s colored at best, not a host, carried by the rest of his team. The man reads the headlines, guys with a mint dollar, could use some effort in his segments,” someone else said.

Others disagree, with one adding: “It’s no different than normal. ‘Meanness’ is part of his thing.”
