Why a man’s children are ‘pissed’ after he asked a bakery to recreate his deceased mother’s chocolate cake
The man was excited to taste his late wife’s cake again, but his children exploded at him after he revealed the bakery’s only condition for recreating the recipe.
A man wonders if he was in the wrong after his sons lashed out at him for ‘selling’ his late wife’s chocolate cake recipe just because he wanted to try it again.
Shared with Reddit’s infamous AITA (“Am I the asshole”) forum, the man’s story breaks down her many attempts to recreate a recipe she left him notes. However, he never managed to achieve this – and when his children refused to help him, he turned to a bakery for help.
Their one condition for cooking it, however, sparked serious family drama. Read on to see the full story and how Redditors reacted.
OP (aka the “original poster”) started his story on Reddit by first revealing how hard it was to lose his wife.
“My late wife died 3 years ago, our two children were in their 20s at the time. The last few years have been difficult and it’s even more difficult now that I live alone,” he began his thread. discussion, before sharing his link with the famous cake.
“She had a delicious dark chocolate and cherry cake. It was her favorite to make and I always asked for it for Father’s Day. I’m a baker and tried to make it again from her notes “The notes are It’s not very clear and it never turns out right. It’s depressing to spend so much time and get it wrong,” the man told Reddit.
He missed the taste of his wife’s cake so much that he even asked his children to try making it. When they “refused,” he sought help elsewhere.
“I wonder if I’m really an idiot. I just wanted to eat his cake again.”
“I asked my two children to try making it, but they refused. I was told they wouldn’t find the recipe and to stop asking. I went to a local bakery and asked them to find out.”
“They agreed on the condition that I gave them permission to sell the cake in the store. It didn’t take them long to realize this and it’s almost exactly the same for my wife’s.” , the man wrote, before revealing how his children reacted to this decision.
“I bought one for Father’s Day and my kids were happy with the cake until I told them the bakery made it. They’re pissed that I’m selling their mom’s recipe (sic) at a bakery,” he wrote. “All this week they’ve been telling me what an asshole I am for this.”
Finally, OP asked to hear the public court’s opinion: “I wonder if I’m really an idiot. I just wanted to eat his cake again.”

With over 1.2K comments at the time of writing, it’s clear the internet is doing it not I think OP is wrong, with Reddit putting its official NTA (“Not the A–hole”) stamp on OP’s post.
In the most upvoted comment, a Redditor told OP that they should look at their decision in a positive light.
“I would consider this a way for your wife to make a living from what she created to bring happiness to others. It’s not like you did it for the money,” the commenter wrote before make a suggestion for the bakery. “Would the bakery consider using your wife’s name in the item name? NTA.”
However, OP responded by saying he “doubts” the bakery would do this because “they’ve done so much already” and even gave him the recipe with “clear instructions.”

Another commenter needed more information about why her children refused to help her and why they were angry about the sale. OP responded, “They claimed they didn’t have the time or energy to do it,” adding, “They hate it when a random person owns and sells mom’s cakes.”
While another commenter shared his thoughts on why he disapproves of controlling family recipes.
“NTA, I literally hate the idea behind secret family recipes. It seems incredibly selfish and self-centered. Plus, no one else was making it and at least now its good ass cake can be shared with others people instead of just being forgotten.” they shared.
The post was received with overwhelming support for OP. In fact, there were only a few people who called OP “the asshole” – with one commenter having a change of heart halfway through reading the post.
“NGL, I was ready to come with a YTA like it was a cake you bake together all the time and it was a money grab… but given the circumstances and their refusal to even help to understand it, you are NTA here,” they wrote.
