17 restaurants opened in metro Detroit in February, plus 5 closures
|Although the month is short, February was certainly filled with openings. I counted 17 new bars, restaurants, cafes and bakeries that have opened in the last few weeks.
Some of the highlights include an upscale downtown Plymouth location that was once a bank, as well as new locations for local pizza favorites Crispelli’s and Pie Sci.
Here are all the details on 17 openings and five closings that took place in the city this month.
The Ledger at Plymouth
A fine dining destination serving cocktails in a former bank building in downtown Plymouth, the Ledger has been preparing for its grand opening for a while. The menu includes charred octopus, tuna tartare, bone marrow, lobster corn dogs, chicken paprikash, as well as vegan dishes and premium cuts of meat. Go all out with the 80-ounce double-bone tomahawk steak for $260. The Ledger is located above the Ebenezer, a clandestine-style cocktail lounge on the lower level. Make reservations through the OpenTable app or website.
Open for dinner Tuesday to Sunday. 306 S. Main, Plymouth. (734) 984-0020. Theledgerplymouth.com.
Crispelli’s Bakery and Pizzeria in Grosse Pointe Woods
The long-awaited and enthusiastically received sixth pizzeria for this local brand of “affordable gourmet,” Crispelli’s in Grosse Pointe Woods is a fast-casual concept for your Italian cuisine and carb fix. In addition to a selection of thin-crust 11-inch round pizzas, the menu offers salads, sandwiches, soups and more. Online ordering is not yet set up, but the doors are open.

Q Bakehouse and Market and Strider Coffee Stop in Ann Arbor
A collaboration between a one-woman catering and pop-up business and a woman-owned bakery, Strider Coffee Stop and Q Bakehouse debuted this month with a focus on hospitality and customer experience before All. They serve coffee from a variety of roasters, tea, and other beverages, as well as pastries, cakes, and small-batch prepared foods of Asian and American origin.
Open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday. 1608 Jackson, Ann Arbor. (734) 489-9664. qannarbor.com.
Sexy Steak in Downtown Detroit
After much anticipation, this cutting-edge upscale steakhouse has opened in the GAR building at Grand River in Cass, downtown Detroit. The name, Sexy Steak, and pre-opening signage of a sultry model made this place a topic of conversation long before it opened, but its location alone would have done it. This castle-like building housed the renowned fine dining restaurant Republic and the more casual Parks and Rec restaurant. Sexy Steak occupies two floors, and space on the third floor can be rented for special events like weddings (there’s even a bridal suite). A sister concept, Sexy Burger, was also revealed last year, but has yet to be released. Make reservations through the OpenTable app or website.
Open from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday to Monday. and Wednesday-Thursday. and from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday to Saturday. Closed on Tuesdays. 1942 Grand River, Detroit. (313) 403-1000. sexysteakdetroit.com.
Pie Sci Pizza in Oak Park
Original Pie Sci Pizza in Detroit’s Woodbridge area has been a favorite for years, and now South Oakland County can partake in some of their gourmet pies. A limited opening menu features square or round pies like the “Vegetarian D” and “Hawaii 5-0,” as well as gluten-free options, cheese bread, vegan cheese bread, salads and desserts . Don’t forget Pie Sci’s signature sauces for drizzling, like balsamic glaze, garlic oil, and vegan herb mayonnaise.
Open at 4 p.m. Thursday to Monday. 8150 W. Nine Mile, Oak Park. (313) 818-0290. piescipizza.com
Weakness for sweets in Shelby Township
This new, modern bakery is having a grand opening Thursday at noon and will be selling cupcakes, layer cakes, sheet cakes, premium ice cream, fudge, cookies, cannoli and more. They can also make personalized creations.
Open from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday. and Sun. and from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. from Friday to Saturday. 46647 Hayes, Shelby Township. (586) 991-5160. weaknessforsweets.bizibakes.com.
