JACKSON COUNTY, MI – As spring approaches and the weather outside slowly warms up after the winter malaise, it’s time to prepare for grilling season by visiting some local barbecue hot spots.

The Jackson County area is certainly no stranger to restaurants that aim to bring southern-style home cooking to southern Michigan. Here are five great Jackson-area destinations for those looking for flavorful sauces and mouth-watering meats.

KeniKakes and more

With a menu that promises new things Every day, this restaurant and catering service strives to make its cuisine yours with its wide variety of home-cooked dishes.

Daily menu items include pulled pork macaroni and cheese, sloppy Joes and other home-cooked dishes, while some of the most popular specialties include barbecue pork chops, catfish salad blackened and chicken Alfredo. Promotions are announced throughout the week on the restaurant’s Facebook page.

Pryor’s BBQ House

This long-time staple in the Jackson community promises a little bit of everything on its menu.

Its diverse selection of popular dishes includes coneys, corn dogs, burgers, homemade desserts and many appetizer and side dishes. Other popular dishes include the cheesesteak hoagie and, of course, barbecue.

Rocky Top beer – BBQ and grills

A favorite destination on the outskirts of Jackson, Rocky Top puts its Ole Hickory Pit Smoker to good use to bring authentic Southern-style barbecue to town.

The restaurant’s 45 flavors of smoked chicken wings were named among the top 10 in the state in MLive’s search for Michigan’s Best Wings in 2017 and have remained a menu staple. The wings are complemented by both the restaurant’s signature barbecue and its diverse range of draft beers.

Other delicious dinner and lunch options include wraps, burgers, seafood and salads.

Saucy Dog BBQ

Whether you’re craving “drool-worthy” wings – available with a wide array of sauce options – or famous crispy fried pork rind appetizers, Saucy Dog’s BBQ more than delivers on its promise of ‘bring good food, good friends. and great barbecue in downtown Jonesville.

Founded in 2005, the restaurant has satisfied locals with a robust menu of soups, burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches and more. Menu staples include the namesake Saucy Dog — a fried hot dog topped with coleslaw and barbecue sauce — as well as desserts like a caramel apple sundae and root beer floats.

West Texas Barbecue Company.

This full-service caterer and “Texas-style barbecue restaurant” needs no introduction to the Jackson community, but even after more than three decades of mouth-watering West Texas finds new ways to expand its dining options.

The brick-and-mortar restaurant is well known for its meat platters, sandwiches and combos, all prepared on site and smoked right outside. The restaurant’s best-selling Texas smoked brisket is by far, and its award-winning pork shoulder, turkey breast and chicken wings are just a few of the many locally famous dishes. Its prime rib sandwich, offered only on Fridays, is something people will travel from all over to get a bite to eat, said owner Hunter Sullivan.

This year, West Texas BBQ hopes to expand even further, offering extended hours, additional seating, a second bathroom and a second food truck.
