5 Notable Restaurants Made the News Recently, Here’s What You Need to Know

It was another busy week for restaurants in metro Detroit, especially downtown, with new locations opening, construction underway or expansions of current establishments.

As the NFL Draft approaches, we expect the restaurant scene to heat up. Here’s what we know recently about restaurants in the news.

Sexy Steak

On the ground floor of Detroit’s historic castle-like Grand Army of the Republic Building, also commonly known as the GAR Building, Sexy Steak is now open. Here, the beef cut is of course one of the highlights. All beef and poultry served here are halal. One of the highlights of the dining room is the presentation of premium cuts of beef in a case lined with Himalayan salt. Steak offerings include premium filet mignon and ribeye from the famous Creekstone Farms. Seafood dishes are on the menu, as well as oysters, salads and sharing dishes. Inside, the ground floor restaurant is spacious with curved, high-backed, blush-colored booths that comfortably seat four people. High tables on the Grand River side. The bar is spacious and makes up a large part of the dining room.

Presley’s Kitchen opens its doors

Restaurants opening inside hotels have been a dominant trend in Detroit’s dining scene since last year. Presley’s Kitchen is one of those places. New Hudson-based Davis Hospitality’s restaurant is now open at the corner of Park and Woodward, on the ground floor of the historic David Whitney Building and Autograph Collection Hotel. Expect a menu of American fare as well as a curated cocktail menu. Presley’s Kitchen is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Brandon and Karissa Davis are the husband and wife owners and operators behind the new concept of Davis Hospitality with co-owner Jason Perras, a South Lyon native.

Albena chief moves west

After announcing the closure of his popular Detroit restaurant, Albena chef and owner Garrett Lipar is moving on. Lipar is heading to the Dixboro Project in the village of Dixboro in Washtenaw County. Joining Pulpo Gorup’s Dixboro Project on April 1, Lipar is executive chef and partner. Sava Farah, a longtime Ann Arbor restaurateur, owns and operates the Dixboro Project and is the CEO and founder of the Pulpo Group, which also owns and operates Sava’s and Aventura restaurants, both located in Ann Arbor. Earlier this month, Lipar and his wife, Tiffany, announced that Albena would close its doors on March 16 after six years in business at the Siren Hotel in downtown Detroit. Albena is known for its distinctive chef’s multi-course tasting menu.

Expanding marrow

Marrow, a popular butcher shop and restaurant in the West Village neighborhood, is expanding to Birmingham with another Marrow Detroit Provisions location. A second location for his Marrow Detroit Provisions butcher shop will open at 283 Hamilton Row in Birmingham. Expect a spring opening, according to the owners. The new spot will offer a full range of fresh meats, aged steaks, sausages, deli items and gourmet sundries. This first location outside of Detroit will also offer a casual menu including hot and cold sandwiches, sausage rolls, salads, soups, snacks and coffee.

Marrow debuted in 2018 in the West Village on Kercheval near Van Dyke. It’s known as two culinary halves that mix well, with a small neighborhood restaurant that focuses on nose-to-tail and farm-to-table butchery and a butcher shop.

Buddy’s Pizza opens 23rd location

The expansion of Buddy Pizza, creator of Detroit-style pizzas, continues. Canton is the new home of a takeout-only Buddy’s Pizza location. This is the 23rd location for the chain founded more than 75 years ago at Six Mile and Conant in Detroit. The new location, 42911 Ford Rd., is Buddy’s Pizza’s seventh takeout-only location.
