Big W Shopper Spots Major Easter Egg Mistake, Prompting Store to Take Action

As Easter approaches, Australians are no doubt on the hunt for the best chocolate buys, but a trip to Big W almost ended in disaster for one woman who almost bought a festive dog treat instead.

The Big W shopper was at his local store in Mudgee, New South Wales, with his teenage children who had been looking at the Easter egg display when they jokingly suggested he buy them the double pack of chocolate bunnies on the shelf above popular Cadbury treats.

“It took me a while to get it,” she posted on Facebook alongside photos of the Pooch Treats Easter Bunny item, admitting it was in the aisle with all the other treats from Easter and therefore had no reason to suspect anything sinister.

But soon she realized that the carob and yogurt treat was not intended for human consumption and was designed only for animals, perhaps mistakenly placed on the wrong shelf by the staff.

Australians shocked by chocolate display: “Why the hell?”

The revelation shocked some on social media who said: “I can see someone buying these products without realizing it.” “Why the hell would they put that with regular chocolate,” said one.

“So many people will make the mistake and buy these for their kids,” one wrote on Facebook, suggesting that the Pooch Treats product should be moved to the pet section instead.

Alarmingly, some admitted they “couldn’t see” the problem before it was revealed, evidence for some that people could easily mistake the product for human chocolate and take it by mistake. Some, however, felt it was “logical” that Easter chocolate for dogs would be “in the aisles reserved for Easter.” One said that “it’s not really their fault that people aren’t careful about what they buy.”

Big W admits mistake, apologizes for ‘confusion’

A spokesperson for Big W confirmed to Yahoo News Australia that this was an “isolated incident” at one of their stores. “(The) Easter dog treats were placed on a display above the Easter chocolate,” they said in a statement.

“The store has since taken immediate action to move the dog treats to an appropriate display with other pet products. We apologize for any confusion or inconvenience this has caused.”

The dog treat is made with yogurt and carob, a safe alternative to chocolate for dogs. Although carob can be safely consumed by humans, this product likely has not been approved for human consumption because it does not meet the same health and safety standards.
