National Cheese Doodle Day 2024 (United States): March 5 is National Cheese Doodle Day, a time to honor cheese doodles in all their forms. History of National Cheese Doodle Day

Much like the origins of many well-known snacks, the history of cheese doodles is full of mystery. One of the most widely recognized involves an individual named Morrie Yohai. Yohai served as president of Old London Foods, a Bronx-based company that his father founded in New York.

Following a series of culinary innovations, the organization embarked on the development of an additional product using animal feed derived from cornmeal. In 1948, this cornmeal was accidentally processed under high pressure by their machines, causing it to take the shape of tubers.

Old London Foods developed this process by creating an assortment of cheese flavors before discovering the optimal combination. Cheese Doodlez then debuted in the market and became an instant hit. Unfortunately, Cheetos, an alternative brand of cheese snacks, eclipsed its rival as it gained nationwide distribution and had broader market appeal.

The Borden Condensed Milk Company acquired Old London Foods, also known as the Cheez Doodle Company, in 1965. Eventually, Borden acquired the Wise snack company and received Cheez Doodle. In the late 1960s, in response to consumer demand for the delicacy, Wise developed Crunchy Cheez Doodles. Their fingers covered in cheese dust didn’t seem to matter because they were so in love with the shape and flavor. It just meant they could savor more of that salty flavor.

Currently, cheese doodles are considered one of the most popular treats and their assortment of flavors is vast. They are an ordinary assortment of festive first courses, and are also used as components in the preparation of other dishes. In the same way that they appeared unintentionally, cheese doodles have evolved into an entity of their own. It’s no wonder these irresistible treats are worth dedicating an entire day to.
