Coffee Mate and Dr Pepper team up to create Dirty Soda Creamer – NBC4 Washington

TikTok remains the undisputed champion of all things viral, and one of its biggest stars is “dirty soda,” a trend in which all kinds of carbonated drinks are treated with all kinds of flavor enhancers, like fruit juices, syrups and half-and-half. . The hashtag has over 170 million views on TikTok.

In one of the most popular series, high school teacher Joseph Hall tries out his students’ favorite dirty soda orders to see if they succeed. He admits sometimes to feeling a little silly ordering gummy sharks on the side, but he keeps going.

Lime or cherry Coca-Cola has been around much longer than TikTok, and 7 Up advertised a recipe mixing milk and soda as far back as the 1940s.

Doodh soda is even older, a concoction dating back to Victorian England and still common in India and Pakistan.

So the trend may not seem so revolutionary until you see what Utah-based beverage store Swig has done with it. With dozens of menu flavors like Beach Bum and Death Star, Swig has been leading the dirty soda charge for years, perhaps because Utah’s large Mormon population loves the opportunity to have fun mixed drinks while by abstaining from alcohol. But with Swig now opening stores in six states and the massive Sonic drive-in chain offering its own versions, the trend has become much bigger than Utah.

It’s not exactly shocking that other restaurants are looking to capitalize on the hottest cold drink in town, but you might be surprised by the newest entrant in the game: Coffee Mate, the most purchased coffee creamer in the States -United.

It’s actually already common for dirty soda lovers to turn to Coffee Mate for their non-coffee needs, but so far it’s been with flavors that work for Java, like French Vanilla or Caramel.

This time there is a real twist. Coffee Mate Dirty Soda Coconut Lime Flavored Creamer was developed in partnership with Dr Pepper, whose market research showed that more than 60% of Coffee Mate customers already drink, to complement the 23 components aromatics of the soda brand. Why do we need two more? Dirty soda lovers almost always opt for a citrus boost and love the sumptuous ice cream float-like texture and flavor that comes from adding dairy, cream, or coconut cream. . The selling points of this home cooking version are that it has a long shelf life, requires no mixing of other ingredients, and with a few added stabilizers you won’t get that dreaded “Pilk” curd “.

The 16-ounce bottle is available for a limited time only and costs $3.29. Let’s try!

I use a 90 calorie mini can of Dr Pepper because I’m a nutrition professional and haven’t finished drinking a soda since college, but you’re free to choose your own adventure. The Coffee Mate Dirty Soda label suggests a 1 tablespoon serving for 35 calories (for context, that’s double the calories of half-and-half by volume), but when I added that even to that serving more small, it sank like a rock. There was just a slight whisper of white near the bottom, so I added an extra tablespoon. It doesn’t swirl beautifully like in the photos, even for a millisecond, but that’s okay if it tastes good. Really ?

There’s not much lime scent, but I catch coconut. Most fizz will quickly leave any soda dirty, because additives give the dissolved carbon dioxide a surface to bubble onto, and this one is no exception. The flavor and mouthfeel are good but disappointing unless you add more than three or four times the amount of cream, which many TikTokers do, for an extra 100 to 140 calories. An extra squeeze of fresh lime was delicious, but it also defeats the purpose of an all-in-one product.

My favorite dirty Rambler grapefruit soda with a splash of simple syrup, Califia Better Half, and a lemon twist has about 100 calories total, and this taste test did nothing to shake my devotion.

How can a registered dietitian talk to you about soda with cream in it with a straight face? Trying different flavors and understanding your preferences can actually help you make your diet more varied, and restriction instead of moderation will backfire. A healthy relationship with food means finding ways to include treats that bring you joy and a sense of indulgence, and sticking to a 7.5-ounce mini can or slathering on a flavored seltzer are some ways to do it more reasonably.

And as everyone in Utah already knows, it’s probably better for you than a margarita!
