House of Pepper Pepper Rice offers more than 20 types of hot dishes, and apart from pepper rice, they also have pepper udon! The stall offers a wider range of ingredients, with aromas of peppered rice such as truffle, Tom yum And bélacan. However, does the taste compare to the iconic Pepper Lunch? I visited to find out.

What I tried at House of Pepper Rice

To enjoy the best of all worlds, I opted for the Pepper Rice Trio (S$12.90)who came with 3 types of proteins. I have to choose from 4 proteins: Chicken, Salmon, Lamb And Beef, and opted for all the meat options. HAS zhng the dish more, I added a Egg (S$1) And Mozzarella cheese (S$1)which brings my total to $14.90.

The high heat from the griddle caused the food to char very quickly, so be sure to toss the dish as soon as you receive it.

Mixing the dish allowed the cheese to be well incorporated into the rice. I enjoyed the taste of the rice as it had butter and a flavorful sauce. The cheese was a great addition, enhancing the texture of the rice and giving it a tangier flavor. Taste-wise, it was quite similar to the Pepper Lunch, especially when I added a little extra sauce from the counter.

Each of the meats sizzled well and were nice and satisfying. I particularly enjoyed the chicken, which was quite tender. The beef and lamb slices were much thinner, causing the griddle to cook them to a crispy texture.

I was a little disappointed with the portions, because even though there were 3 types of meat in the dish, the overall protein amount was very low, especially considering the high price. Although the Rice Trio Pepper was satisfactory in terms of taste, the price was not justified.

Then I tried the Rice with mushrooms, chicken, truffles and cheese (S$10.90)— as a big fan of truffles, I was interested to know how House of Pepper Rice would incorporate this popular element into their dishes.

In all honesty, I could barely taste the truffle in this dish. I liked the juiciness of the chicken pieces and the mushrooms provided a good contrast, with their chewy textures, but I was a little disappointed by the sweetness of the truffle aspect itself. I liked that there was at least a lot of cheese, which satisfied the cheese lover in me.

As the Rice Trio Pepperthe chicken portions were rather meager and did not justify the S$10.90 price.

THE Pepper, Beef, Mushroom and Truffle Rice (S$11.50) was similar to Rice with mushrooms, chicken, truffles and cheese, except it was served with slices of beef and no cheese. I hate to say it again, but the beef portion was way too stingy – I counted about 3 strips of thinly sliced beef, hastily topped with a handful of chopped mushrooms.

The truffle taste here was a little more pronounced than that of the Rice with mushrooms, chicken, truffles and cheese as the lack of cheese allowed the flavor to come through more. However, it was also quite soft and practically disappeared once all the elements were mixed into the rice.

The heat from the griddle charred the thin beef and made it very crispy. Although I personally didn’t mind the crispy texture, if you prefer your beef to stay moist, I recommend tossing the dish as soon as you make it. receive it.

Again, the high price was not justified by the small portions.

House of Pepper Rice - Hamburg Pepper and Beef Noodles with Egg

Finally, I tried the Beef and Hamburg Pepper Noodles with Egg (S$10.50) to House of Pepper Rice, which accompanied udon noodles, a hamburger beef patty, an egg and an assortment of vegetables. This was my first time trying udon on a griddle, but I was sadly disappointed.

The beef hamburger had a strange, mushy texture inside and tasted quite one-dimensional. The vegetables on the side were pretty average, like they came from a frozen package at a supermarket.

I didn’t find the udon be too pleasant either: the heat from the griddle dried out the noodles a bit, giving them a slightly rubbery and strangely chewy texture. I had to drizzle the udon with a little extra sauce to enhance its flavors, and was generally disappointed with the dish overall.

If you are a lover of udon, maybe you will enjoy this dish more than me. However, I would still recommend the rice dishes.

Final Thoughts

House of Pepper Rice’s biggest downside was undoubtedly its stingy protein portions, especially compared to its prices. Most of the dishes I tried cost more than S$10, but all contained only a tiny amount of meat, disproportionate to the serving of rice. I can’t deny that the rice dishes I tried were quite tasty, but pale in comparison to its main competitor, Pepper Rice, which offers larger portions at a lower price.

House of Pepper Rice certainly shows a lot of promise with its extensive menu and unique selections. Unfortunately, I don’t plan on choosing this stand over Pepper Rice, given the high prices and disappointing portions. Hopefully the stall will be more liberal with their portions next time to better justify the prices.

Expected damage: S$6 to S$12.90 per person
